The year was 1936. Under a tense and politically charged atmosphere, the Summer Olympics were held in Berlin, Germany, which also marked the first live television coverage of a sporting event. Franklin D. Roosevelt was re-elected to a second term as United States President. Girl Scout cookies began to be sold nationwide. And 67 youth exhibitors converged on the Old Union Stockyards for the inaugural Junior Livestock Show of Spokane.
As one of the longest running youth livestock shows in the nation, we are as proud of our historical and economic significance to the region as we are of the youth who have graced our showrings. The founding documents of our organization state Junior Show’s purpose is to “stimulate character building in boys and girls by breeding, rearing, and improving domestic and other livestock animals.” In recent years, it’s simply put to “Cultivate Youth and Promote Livestock.”
While times have changed, the Junior Livestock Show of Spokane is committed to adapt while remaining true to our aims and purposes. Hosting a premier livestock event is always the goal, and we are excited for additional opportunities for youth to gain leadership skills through our expanded programs. 2024 saw a record level of participation in meats evaluation, a huge response from added contests like Team Fitting and Ag Sales, as well as the successful rollout of an Intern Program. More is in store for 2025 and beyond and all are welcome to join!
To me, watching youth grow and excel through their livestock projects brings excitement and comfort in the future. I think the continued, and humbling, support from area business sponsors and individuals demonstrates a shared belief in our programs and activities. From the bottom of my heart, thank you to all who invest in our organization, and ultimately, our youth.
Let’s see where the next 90 years takes us!
