Be a part of Paradise Renewed
|
|
The Virginia Key Beach Park Trust is dedicated to the restoration, development, and operation of Historic Virginia Key Beach Park, preserving it as a valuable cultural resource to be enjoyed for posterity.
The Virginia Key Beach Park Trust archive is an oral history and photographic collection containing interviews from activists and citizens who participated in or experienced South Florida segregation and civic activism in the mid 1940s.
This civic activism was the foundation for the creation of the "colored only" Virginia Key Beach in 1945 (now the Historic Virginia Key Beach Park) as well as its current restoration through the efforts of the Virginia Key Beach Park Trust.
Oral history interviewees uniquely recount their personal experiences and histories about the beach, including stories about relatives, friends, and both political and personal battles in the segregated climate. They also discuss their personal beliefs, political activism, and current issues involving the restoration and preservation of the beach as well as a plan of action to implement the park's museum.
Be apart of "paradise renewed" by submitting your memories of Historic Virginia Key Beach Park. For more information on how to submit and digitize your photos, videos and testimonials call 305-960-4600.
The Virginia Key Beach Park Trust - Digital Archive Program is funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).
