CGN's Global Nursing Research Seed Award

The Global Nursing Research Seed Award provides up to $5,000 to support UCSF Center for Global Nursing members and global partners in advancing their global health research.
This award supports UCSF nurses and Advanced Practice Providers and
global partners in advancing global health research by fostering clinical inquiry, launching early investigator projects, and strengthening partnerships. Focus areas include nurse-led initiatives to improve quality care in global settings, translating research into clinical practice, and developing sustainable global collaborations for equitable healthcare solutions.

CGN Global Nursing Advisory Council Member:
Strengthening Emergency Nursing Guidelines

CGN Certificate in Global Nursing Faculty and Global Nursing Advisory Council Member, Josephine Nabulime, MSN, RN, a Critical Care and Emergency Care Nurse Leader at Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kawempe, Uganda, collaborates with her colleagues in the Accident and Emergency Unit to standardize emergency nursing operational guidelines and promote safe, timely, high-quality care.
The initiative aims to:
- Deliver safe, timely, high-quality care;
- Prevent complications in surgical patients;
- Reduce missed diagnoses; and,
- Strengthen care delivery in a fast-paced, unpredictable emergency department environment.
The project spans ten months, including two months of preparation and eight months of implementation. The team is pictured planning budgeting and preparations.

CGN Global Nursing Advisory Council Member:
Elevating Women in Leadership
| |
CGN Faculty and Global Nursing Advisory Council Member, Maly Chittaphai, RN, Nursing Director at Lao Friends Hospital for Children (LFHC), has been nominated as a Women of the Future 50 Rising Stars in ESG.
As highlighted in the photograph, Maly has participated in a Women in Leadership program since last year, with completion anticipated in June 2026. The program has strengthened Maly’s leadership capacity, empowering her to further develop her skills as a supportive emergency nurse leader and a professional Train-the-Trainer.
Maly serves as a Principal Investigator and collaborates with CGN on an American Academy of Pediatrics' ICATCH Grant (2025–2028) to strengthen the identification and stabilization of critically ill children at the only pediatric referral hospital in northern Laos. LFHC serves more than 45,000 children annually.

Welcome Sahar El Rayah, MPH, MS, BDS
| |
The Center for Global Nursing is delighted to welcome Sahar El Rayah, MPH, MS, BDS, to our team as our new Program Coordinator. Sahar is a global health professional with a background in dentistry and public health. She completed her Master of Science in Global Health here at IGHS in 2025.
With over five years of hands-on experience, Sahar has collaborated with national health programs and esteemed international partners, including the World Health Organization (WHO), specializing in health systems strengthening, monitoring and evaluation, and capacity building for healthcare workers in resource-limited and conflict-affected environments. Passionate about advancing health equity, Sahar's professional interests encompass infectious diseases, HIV prevention and treatment, clinical training, and enhancing service delivery in humanitarian settings.
We are excited for Sahar to bring her skills and passion to CGN, and we look forward to the many contributions she will make to our mission!

Michele Mullin, RN, BSN, CCRN
Critical Care Nurse, UCSF Medical Center
Michele Mullin combines a strong foundation in public health with a passion for critical care. She currently works as a registered nurse in the Intensive Care Unit at UCSF’s Mt. Zion campus and in the Surgery/Trauma Intensive Care Unit at San Francisco General Hospital. Michele also serves as a team lead for the UCSF Roving Community Health Initiative, where her team delivers mobile healthcare services in San Francisco’s Mission and Tenderloin neighborhoods. Through this program, Michele's team provides vaccinations, wound care, medical referrals, overdose prevention services, and connections to substance use treatment.
In Spring 2025, Michele participated as a scholar in CGN's inaugural Certificate in Global Nursing and Clinical Global Scholars programs. As a Clinical Global Scholar, Michele collaborated with ICU staff at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya, to implement a nursing education program focused on traumatic brain injury management. Michele is also a Program Lead for CGN's Systematic Assessment Resuscitation Training (StART) Pediatric Basic Life Support (BLS) program, a collaboration with Mulgao National Referral Hospital. Michele's global health work also includes disaster relief efforts in Papua New Guinea and Malawi, as well as clinical work in India.
We are honored to recognize Michele's commitment to advancing critical care nursing, global health leadership, and community health initiatives.

CGN's Global Nursing Impact Series

CGN is honored to welcome Melesi’i Inu ki Ha’angana Filise, Chief Nursing Officer for the Ministry of Health in Tonga, as our March 10th presenter.
Melesi'i Inu Ki Ha'angana Filise, MSN, MEd, RN, serves as the Chief Nursing Officer for the Ministry of Health in Tonga, where she leads the country’s largest healthcare workforce and oversees national initiatives to strengthen nursing and midwifery services. With more than three decades of experience, she is recognized for her leadership in advancing the quality, safety, and professional development of nursing across all levels of care. Passionate about education and workforce development, she continues to advocate for nursing leadership, professional advancement, and equitable access to quality health services throughout Tonga and the Pacific region.
About the Global Nursing Impact Series:
Nurses and advanced practice providers play a pivotal role in improving global population health. CGN's Global Nursing Impact Series offers a platform to highlight their leadership and impact in advancing health equity and to promote collaboration on these initiatives. Each session will feature a 20-minute presentation by invited speakers, followed by a Q&A.*
*While the Global Nursing Impact Series is typically held on Zoom from 7 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. Pacific Time, the March 10th session has been scheduled to better accommodate our colleagues in the Asia-Pacific Region.
This series is open to all nurses, global partners, and professionals interested in global health.

2026 CGN Cultural Humility Course Dates

CGN’s Introduction to Cultural Humility Course offers a foundational exploration of cultural humility within the contexts of nursing, advanced practice, and global health sciences. The course supports nurses and Advanced Practice Providers in recognizing personal bias, understanding how power and privilege shape clinical encounters, and building skills to foster more equitable, respectful partnerships in all settings.
This course is open to all nurses and Advanced Practice Providers, whether or not they are participating in CGN’s global programs.
3 CEs provided.

2026 Community Meetings and Journal Club

Join CGN's Community Meetings and Journal Club to participate in an open forum for nursing professionals to connect, collaborate, and engage with the latest developments in global health nursing. Our meetings are held virtually and are open to all members of the global nursing community, whether you are currently engaged in global health work or looking to expand your knowledge and network. Be a part of the conversation and help drive meaningful change in global health nursing!
1 CE provided for each one-hour session.
*The series is open to all UCSF faculty, students, staff, global partners, and professionals interested in the field of global health.
CGN Global Nursing Advisory Council Member, Faculty, and Seed Awardee Joe P. Davies, BSN, RN, and UCSF School of Nursing Faculty and CGN Member, Celina Trujillo, MPH, MSN, RN, will host a dynamic and engaging Journal Club as we explore their December 2025 PLOS Global Health study, “Prospective cohort study evaluating feasibility, acceptability, and clinical impact of diabetes self-management education in a PEN-Plus program in Southeastern Liberia.” Their study highlights the measurable impact of nurse-led chronic disease initiatives and the expanding role of nursing leadership in advancing global health equity.

Register now and submit your abstract for the 9th Annual Africa Interdisciplinary Health Conference (AfIHC), organized in collaboration with Mzumbe University, on the theme Bridging Disciplines to Address Dual Burden of Infectious and Non-Communicable Diseases in Africa. The conference will be hosted in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and online on August 19-21, 2026, with the Pre-Conference Workshop on August 17-18, 2026. The conference is founded and co-directed by Dr. Jerry Ouner (Nutor), PhD, RN, Associate Professor at the UCSF School of Nursing and Faculty for CGN's Certificate in Global Nursing.

Register now and submit your abstract for the Wound Continence & Enterostomal Therapy Nurses Annual Conference. The conference will take place on May 27-29, 2026 at the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral, and Research Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya. Submit abstracts by March 31, 2026.

| | Muhimbili National Hospital Introduces a Perioperative Nursing Course in Tanzania | | |
Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH), with support from the UCSF Center for Global Nursing (CGN), is launching a five-month Perioperative Nursing Course for registered nurses.
This course, the first of its kind in Africa, provides an opportunity to establish high and consistent standards of perioperative nursing practice for operating room nurses. The blended program of weekly theory sessions, skills labs, and supervised practice builds competence in perioperative assessment, sterile technique and safety, team communication, and protocol-aligned standardized care across orthopedic, obstetrics and gynecology, general and gastrointestinal, pediatric, ophthalmology, ENT, dental, and urology. The course is open to all nurses, with OR nurses especially encouraged to apply.

| | Pediatric Volunteer Opportunity in Laos | | |
Lao Friends Hospital for Children (LFHC) is the only hospital in northern Laos that provides specialty pediatric care, offering free services to underserved families in the region. It focuses on improving access to essential health services while supporting sustainable healthcare through training local providers. Volunteering offers a meaningful way to contribute to the hospital's mission and make a difference in children's lives.
Lao Friends Hospital for Children accepts applications for medical and nursing volunteers throughout the year. All individuals interested in volunteering should be able to spend two months at LFHC during their first visit. Anyone interested is welcome to send their resumes to hr@fwablaos.org.
