Celebrating the 1st year of the Center for Global Nursing
March 13th at 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm (in-person)
Please join us at the UCSF Institute for Global Health Sciences to celebrate the first year of the UCSF Center for Global Nursing. The event will begin with presentations from IGHS and Nursing leadership, followed by a reception for networking and collaboration. We welcome all UCSF nurses, APPs, and faculty who are involved or interested in being involved at the CGN along with our greater IGHS community.

Nursing’s impact on global health through partnership, education, advocacy, and research

According to the World Health Organization, 27.9 million nurses make up nearly 60 percent of health professions, the largest occupational group in the health sector. As a prominent member of the global workforce, nurses dominate population health impact through patient care, research and leadership. The WHO and the National Academy of Medicine both acknowledge the strength and power of nursing and call upon nurses to engage, lead and act as agents of change in health equity efforts worldwide. Rebecca Silvers, director of the UCSF Center for Global Nursing, and Jerry Nutor, faculty at the UCSF School of Nursing and IGHS affiliate member, will highlight nursing’s impact on the world through partnership, education, advocacy and research.

Global Action in Nursing (GAIN) Lunch &Learn |

Thank you to the GAIN nurses and midwives who joined the IGHS and CGN community during their Bay Area visit.
Eight of our GAIN colleagues from Liberia, Malawi, Sierra Leone, and Memphis, TN, hosted a panel discussion at Mission Hall on providing midwifery care globally, focusing on their experiences improving maternal and neonatal health outcomes.
Thank you to GAIN director Dr. Kimberly Baltzell and the team for hosting the event and sharing their important global maternal-child health insight with our community.

Global Initiative for Children’s Surgery (GICS)
|
"Children's Surgery as an Essential Component of Global Health:
Eliminating Disparities"
in Manila, Philippines, in February 2024
GICS is working towards increasing nursing representation at its meetings. Through the CGN sponsorship, three partners from Laos, including two nurses, Vandee Xiong (OR nurse/manager) and Noy Keopaseuth (nurse anesthetist) and Dr. Vee Thongkhan (the second pediatric surgeon in Loas) from Lao Friends Hospital for Children, were able to present on Establishing Paediatric Surgical Services in the North of Laos.
Our director, Dr Silvers, presented UCSF's Center for Global Nursing's approach to supporting global perioperative nursing development. She was in good company alongside the Director of the UCSF Center for Health Equity in Surgery & Anesthesia (CHESA), Doruk Ozgediz, UCSF BCH-SF's cardiac anesthetist, Hung Nguyen, and our global partners.

2024 CGN Cultural Humility Course
Registration is now open!
We received great feedback from last year's participants and are excited to continue to offer our 3-hour introductory course on cultural humility for all UCSF nurses, APPs, and faculty. Cultural humility is the cornerstone of all global health work and our expertise on this topic is essential to optimize equitable partnerships and cross-cultural collaborations.
Our own UCSF nursing/APP faculty and staff are facilitating the course. Looking forward to seeing you there!
There is no cost for the course at this time. 3 CEUs will be provided.
Time: 9 am - 12 pm

Marilyn Bazinski, DNP, RN-BC, AGCNS
Clinical Nurse Specialist, Pain Management
Marilyn has been extremely fortunate to have traveled extensively. In her early 20s, she visited several states in Mexico and several countries in Central and South America. These experiences helped shape her understanding of life and living and provided an immense respect for the value of community. In January of 2017, Marilyn participated in an interprofessional student program in Kenya as part of her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program. The program's goal was for students to experience the social and environmental factors that impact the health and well-being of individuals, families, and children in low-income communities. They also discussed at length how students or other international assistance could benefit their host communities.
Marilyn joined the UCSF CGN in 2023 to foster our local community and to continue her pursuit of knowledge and opportunities in the global nursing realm.

UCSF CGN Travel Stipend
Application Closes soon
The Center for Global Nursing has identified funding for travel and visa costs as a barrier for nurses and APPs interested in participating in global health work.
This travel award has been created to support our community members engaged in global health efforts as clinicians, researchers, or program managers. Application for awards will be open twice yearly.
If you have travel plans for work in the field of global health sciences with travel costs between January 2024 and June 2024, please apply below for consideration.
First Application cycle: March 31st, 2024
Award up to $1,500

Sigma Theta Tau/Alpha Eta Chapter Nursing Research Grants – Call for Proposals
All active (paid) members of Sigma Theta Tau/Alpha Eta Chapter are eligible to apply. Usual grants awarded are $2,500-$3,500. The maximum award is$4,000. The Chapter aims to select two or more awardees per year, depending on quality of applications and available funding.
Applications must be received by March 15, 2024 5pm (Pacific Time). Applicants will be notified of the funding decision by April 26, 2024.

The Roving Community Health Initiative
Community Opportunity
|
|
The Roving Community Health Initiative is a team of UCSF clinicians (RN, NP, PA) who work alongside community organizations and volunteers to provide vaccinations, wound care, and harm reduction in San Francisco, primarily in the Tenderloin and South of Market. Most of the work is on "roving teams" serving our unhoused and marginally housed community members.
Shifts are paid but voluntary and on top of your regular position at UCSF. RCHI covers your time (including OT when applicable), so your home department is not charged.
You need manager approval to pick up shifts, and shifts should be fine with your home department schedule.
Regular opportunities are:
- Thursday and Saturday
- 11 am to 4:30 pm (5 hours paid after 30-minute break deducted)
The first hour of each shift includes prep and orientation for newcomers. Clinicians go out in pairs to work together and support each other. Newcomers are paired with somebody with experience.
