MI Chamber Webinar on Independent Contractors vs. Employees
The U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) final rule on the Employee or Independent Contractor Classification under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) went into effect on March 11, 2024.
This may result in workers, including those previously with independent contractor status, being classified as employees – subjecting them to minimum wage, overtime pay, and record-keeping standards.
Companies using independent contractors are advised to consult with legal counsel to determine how to proceed.
The Michigan Chamber of Commerce is providing a webinar with Bodman law firm on April 3, 2024, for businesses to learn more and to avoid misclassifying workers.

Tribal Day
The 2023/2024 Manistee Area Leadership Program cohort embarked on a visit to the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians Government Center to participate in Tribal Day.
When we arrived, we were warmly greeted by Ogema Larry Romanelli and Tribal Manager William Willis. We commenced the day by engaging with historian Jonnie "Jay" Sam to gain insights into the culture and narratives of the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians, followed by a comprehensive tour of the Aki Housing and Water Treatment Facility. Our day included a unique opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions with the elders during a shared lunch, fostering valuable conversations. The day culminated with an educational session at the Natural Resources building, where we delved into the intricate aspects of wildlife and fisheries management. We extend our gratitude to all the departments involved for their collaborative efforts in enriching the knowledge of our future leaders on the profound impact of LRBOI on the
community.
Brought to you by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Thank you Sherri from Manistee County Tourism for coming to share some tips and tricks of social media and how they can tie them in with their class project.
Special thanks to our presenting sponsors: Munson Healthcare Manistee Hospital, Filer Credit Union, and West Shore Community College.

RIBBON CUTTING: The Outsider
Big congratulations to The Outsider restaurant for obtaining their redevelopment liquor license!
This achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Fabers, who have worked tirelessly to transform The Outsider into a place where families and friends can come together and enjoy our beautiful downtown.
Obtaining this license was no easy feat, as it required the business to invest at least $75,000 in the rehabilitation or restoration of the building. But with the support of the Manistee Downtown Development Authority, Manistee Area Chamber of Commerce, and the City of Manistee, The Outsider has successfully navigated the process and come out on top.
This success story is a true example of collaboration between our community and businesses, and we couldn't be prouder of The Outsider for their perseverance and determination. Here's to many more fantastic moments at The Outsider restaurant - cheers to the Fabers!
