FIND OUT IF YOUR PROPERTY HAS ACCESS TO UTOPIA

We get questions every day from residents regarding whether or not their property can access UTOPIA.  We have made the process of finding out much more simple.

When you log into your utility account you can see clearly whether or not your property is accessible to UTOPIA.

Visit our webpage to see if your property can connect and to learn more about the questions you may have regarding UTOPIA.

OREM LIBRARY - BETTER THAN BLOCKBUSTER

The Orem Public Library has a collection of over 12,000 movies and they rent for $1 a week.  The collection is better than anywhere in Utah County with the classics from The Burbs, Austenland, Blade, The Fugitive, On Our Own, and most everything else you can imagine (with the exception of Rad and Song of the South).

Non-Fiction movies are free and seasons of television shows rent for $.50 per disc.
CONSTRUCTION - NEW WATERLINE ON  2000 S. FROM SANDHILL RD. TO GENEVA RD.

In preparation for new development in southwest Orem, a 16" waterline is being constructed from Sandhill Rd. to Geneva Rd. on 2000 South.

As was promised during the annexation of southwest Orem, the cost of utility construction is being born by the developer, not by the City.

Assuming weather is good, construction should be completed by early spring.

FREE TAX HELP TO QUALIFYING RESIDENTS

Basically, through United Way Worldwide, people who make less than $64,000 a year can file their taxes for free with H&R Block's online tool.

HAZARDOUS WASTE CLEAN UP - APRIL 8th
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - MOUNTAINLAND ASSOCIATION OF GOVERNMENTS

The Long Term Care Ombudsman Program is looking for Volunteers to visit long term care facilities monthly to 1) monitor specific regulatory items and 2) speak with residents about their concerns.

Background with aging or disabled populations preferred.  Training provided.  Mileage reimbursement available.  Two year commitment required.

Contact Ann Humpherys 801-229-3827 / [email protected].

SPRING CLEAN UP (APRIL - MAY 2017)

Watch for a mailed newsletter in the coming weeks and mailed postcards announcing our spring clean-up program (a free dump pass will also be included).  Last year we launched a new program where dumpsters stayed in place for an entire week.  It was wildly successful and we plan to do it again!

A full schedule of locations and dates is now available by following the button below.

DOG PARK AND SPLASH PAD SET UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Both the Splash Pad and the Dog Park have broken ground and are planning to open early Summer.  These two amenities will be huge additions to Orem's recreational offering!  We hope you enjoy.

Splash Pad - Located at Palisade Park (1300 E and 800 N)

Dog Park - Located at Timpanogos Park (about 1 mile up Provo Canyon on the left)

THE "SAFE EXCHANGE ZONE" @ OREM PD

A year and a half ago some citizens suggested the City create a "safe exchange zone" so citizens could have a safe/monitored place to meet someone. Over the last year and a half this has been used for a variety of reasons (buying/selling something, meeting someone that you would rather not meet at your own home, etc.). This is right in front of the police station (just east of the flagpoles), and it is under surveillance 24/7.

We hope you find this to be a great resource.

MAYOR'S MESSAGE:
WHAT CAN I DO?

This past week I had a scout come to my home to visit with me.  He is working on his Citizenship in the Community merit badge. During our visit he asked me what he could do to help our community.

The very next day I was in a meeting with the Chairman of the Board of a large Utah construction company and a Chief Executive Officer of a large local development company. During the conversation the CEO asked, what can I do to help our community.

Yesterday I attended a grand reopening of a hotel in Orem.  The owner, while celebrating the event, put most of his time and efforts into using the event to raise money for the Make a Wish foundation.  While he spoke of his hotel, he spent his time promoting the foundation, and introducing a recipient young woman named Emily who had a rare blood disease.  Money was raised for the foundation.  Her younger brother who gave bone marrow to her for a bone marrow transplant was also introduced.

These are wonderful meetings and events where citizens and friends of our great city are asking what they can do to help build a better community.  Their desire is not for personal gain, financial reward, or name recognition.  But rather their desire is to give back to their community for all to share in and to help those around them.

To me this is the attitude of true awareness and unselfishness.  It is an attitude that builds our community and also helps our friends, families, and neighbors.

I mentioned to the scout that he could look around and see if there is a widow or a family that could use his help.  I asked him to look over his street, sidewalks, and streetlights to see if any physical needs should be looked at by the city in his neighborhood.

The CEO mentioned that he wanted his firm to be involved in whatever way would seem best to help the community to improve and move forward.  His thoughts were to support and help with his resources in ways that would be beneficial, not for him personally, but for others in the community.

I admire all of the people that I have met this past week.  The best part of serving as Mayor of our great city, is the opportunity I have to meet and be around the wonderful friends of and residents of Orem. These examples of those in our community bring out a feeling of cheer and optimism for what the future can hold for us as citizens.

I believe that each of us can ask "What we can do for our community"  in our own area of influence and residence in the city.

It is a great city. It is our community.  It is our responsibility to help each other and our city to make a Better Orem.
