 VFW/Auxiliary Post #3541

3/17/2025

Member of the Week

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3541 was started by the veterans of Sterling Colorado. They elected George Burk as the first Sterling VFW Commander in September 1936. The current Sterling VFW Commander is Michael Stevens.

Each hall of the Veterans of Foreign Wars is named after veterans who served in foreign combat. Each Post member votes to dedicate the hall to a local veteran upon receiving their charter. Sterling VFW Post is called Jake Uhrig VFW Post #3541. It was dedicated Sept. 8, 1936, to Jake Uhrig, a Sterling Veteran who served in the United States Marine Corps in 1918.

Veterans of Foreign Wars’ mission is to foster camaraderie among United States veterans of overseas conflict. When a Veteran is discharged from the military, the VFW is not given their contact information. A veteran must contact their local VFW. If a Veteran contacts their local Veterans of Foreign Wars, the VFW can help & support veterans after their transition to civilian life. They offer scholarships for students, they help veterans in need, they advocate on behalf of all veterans and support their local town with any veterans’ requests. The VFW along with the American Legion, has conducted countless funeral services for local fallen heroes by presenting military honors. The VFW conducts flag details, flag retirement and presentations. They have started a program to teach flag courtesy in schools. The VFW donates to the local organizations and helps in the distribution of donated goods. They also donate time to teach flag courtesy in schools.

The VFW has recently renovated their building in their hall, kitchen, stage, bathrooms and landscaping. Their facility, which includes a newly fenced courtyard and a full sized kitchen, can be rented out for public activities such as weddings, graduations and birthday parties.

The Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3541 in Sterling was established March 5, 1944, to support veterans, the community, and work with youth groups. They moved into the 803 Phelps Street location in 2005. The current Auxiliary President is Regina Borland Schroeder.

In November, the Auxiliary conducts an annual Poppy Donation Drive and a Bean Feed for the community in November of each year. The money raised is used to help our local veterans in nursing homes, to assist the VAs in Cheyenne, Denver, and the National Home. Locally, the Auxiliary has given gifts to Head Start and supports the Family Resource Center. This year they provided 200 Christmas Cards to local nursing homes; Head Start and Veterans.

You may contact the Veterans of Foreign Wars by calling 970-522-2153 and leaving a message or call J.D. at 970-580-9510, and you can find them on Facebook at Sterling VFW Post 3541. You may call the Auxiliary Post at 970-571-2880. They are both located at 803 Phelps Street.

Please join the Logan County Chamber of Commerce to congratulate the VFW Post #3541 & the VFW Auxiliary as this week’s Member of the Week and tying our community together!
