Greetings from Council Member Mike Knox
At Large Council Member Pos 1
Houston is in the process of changing our building codes in response to Hurricane Harvey. These changes will impact homeowners and businesses throughout the city. If you would like more information about these proposed changes, click on this link.

Precinct 4 Commissioner Jack Cagle dropped by the At Large 1 office to talk about how the city and county can work closer together for our neighbors. As commissioner, Cagle represents 1.2 million residents and manages a staff of 469 employees with a Precinct 4 budget of $245 million.
Houston Community College opened their Northline Campus with a dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony. The brand new campus sits on the Metro Light Rail and quickly connects the Northline Campus to the Main Campus in downtown. H.C.C offers a wide variety of continuing education classes for working adults.
Houston City Council approved an agreement with the Houston SaberCats for $3 million towards the construction of utilities’ infrastructure and a parking lot next to Strikers Stadium which is to be built in the Houston Amateur Sports Park (HASP).

The funding to make improvements on this land was approved by voters in a 2012 Bond Referendum. The SaberCats will be spending $5 million to build the stadium and required infrastructure. The park is on Kirby Drive south of Airport Blvd. adjacent to US 288. HASP was built on 88 acres of City property purchased in 2008 for creation of a multi-use sports complex.

"Picnic in the Park" was this year's theme for the Memorial Park Conservancy's fund raiser. Through sustained leadership, meaningful investment and strategic efforts, Memorial Park Conservancy, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, protects, restores and preserves Memorial Park for the enjoyment of all Houstonians, today and tomorrow.
Among the honors of being an elected official is to recognize outstanding leaders in our community. Dr. Robert Charles Santee was the first African American player drafted by the Houston Astros in 1966. He is a graduate of Carverdale High School and went on to receive his doctorate from Pendleton Chapel Seminary School. He volunteers his time at the Star of Hope.
Houston Hispanic Forum held their annual career day at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Educators, elected officials, law officers and captains of industry played host all day helping thousands of young people decide how they want to apply themselves to the world we live in.

With Mayor Turner at the Houston Millennials Leadership Conference. Their mission is to empower local millennials through a network that reflects our generation’s diversity in order to generate transformative change through various activities. These leaders will then give back to the community by promoting the spread of useful skills and information.
Rodeo Uncorked! highlights wine production in agriculture. Before the annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™, the Rodeo hosts an International Wine Competition, a food competition and wine auction. Visit the  Champion Wine Garden where the champion wines from the International Wine Competition are served.
The Lunar New Year is celebrated on a different day each year and in 2018 it begins on Friday, February 16. The Chinese zodiac moves in a 12-year cycle and each year has a corresponding animal. This year it's the Year of the Dog which means people born in 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, or 2018 are all 'dogs'. Those born in the Year of the Dog are considered loyal, honest and selfless, but they can also be stubborn.

The Lunar New Year is celebrated throughout the world and here in Houston with colorful parades, dragon dancers and great food.
The "March On Crime" campaign was created in December 1984 out of growing concern over violent crimes being committed in the Black community and expanded to include all Houstonians. The Houston Police Department has since held the March On Crime campaign every year dedicating their efforts to inform the general public about crime prevention. They include Drug Awareness, Crime Stoppers, Neighborhood Watch, Personal Safety, Burglary Prevention and Crimes Against the Elderly and Juveniles.
This year the Public Affairs Division, in conjunction with the Patrol Divisions, will reinforce the Keep Houston Safe Public Safety Campaign citywide.

Exploring Houston can be a challenge. Where to go? What to do? What are the interesting parts of this spread-out city? If you’re here for a short visit, seeing Houston with an “insider” – a Houston Greeter – will offer you a quick overview. If you live here, you might welcome an insider to show you particular parts of the city you don’t know.
The $90 billion disaster relief funding legislation passed by Congress and signed by the President marks another crucial step forward as Texans continue to recover and rebuild in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, and I thank the Texas delegation and leaders in Congress for taking action to pass this critical recovery package. While Texans will continue to struggle in Harvey’s wake, long after this vote, our resilient spirit remains strong. We will continue working at the federal, state and local levels to ensure we emerge from this disaster stronger than ever.
Rodeo Houston rolled into town over the weekend with thousands of trail riders leading the annual parade through downtown. To get the full rundown of all rodeo activites visit their website  www.rodeohouston.com
