“Work lovingly done is the secret of all order and all happiness.”

Pierre-Auguste Renoir

Hello Everyone!

LET”S PARTY!!!

If you are not familiar with Renoir’s “The Luncheon of the Boating Party,” it is a painting that he did of some of his friends, fellow impressionist artists and their models. Let’s do the same thing and come to the gallery to talk about art, share food, wine/beer and a good time. We hope to see all of our members and their spouses there.

General Member Mixer

On April 15, from 6 to 8:00pm NBAL will be hosting our annual member gathering (potluck) at the gallery.

Laraine Romine will be bringing her delicious pork loin as our main meat dish. If pork is not for you, then please feel free to bring another meat to share.

Attending members are asked to bring side dishes and desserts.

This year we are also providing wine and beer; but, if you would like to bring drinks from home, then please do. Please keep in mind that everyone who is drinking should drink responsibly.

Activities:

Book Sale – Myra Knapp will have a table of our extra art books from the library to sell.

Art Exchange – Bring a small piece of your artwork to exchange with other artists.

Short Film – Vickie Moon Merchant will be presenting an award-winning short film based on her and Kay Kronke Betz’s book “The Story of the Rockport-Fulton Art Colony”. It was awarded the Best Documentary at the Texas short film festival.

Film Clip – Larry Johnson will be showing a video compilation of the Art League's events and shows from 2024. This video was produced to accompany our proposal to the Texas Arts Commission for a grant that was submitted March 1.

Games with Prizes – Gina Eby will have games for us to play with prizes to win.

Lend a Helping Hand

Can you imagine trying to keep up with all of the toilet paper, paper towels, and cleaning products that our organization consumes throughout the year??? That is the tough job that Ralph Nordenhold (Purchasing) does for us. Tuesday and Friday Docents who are asked to restock the bathrooms on their workdays and the Housekeeping Team that are using the cleaning products, or anyone who sees that we are running low, let’s all help him out by writing items that we need onto the shopping list that he keeps on the refrigerator in the kitchen. Thank you, Ralph!

New Braunfels Parks Foundation

The NB Parks Foundation has contacted us again this year for help with their Saengerfest Silent Auction that they hold to raise money for their many projects around town. Please contact Patrick Lackey before April 28 if you want to donate artwork. palackey123@gmail.com

Canyon Lake Art Guild

Congratulations on your beautiful annual show “Lasting Impressions”. We are so happy to share our space with you and consider you to be our brothers and sisters in art.

NBAL members if you live in the Canyon Lake area, then you really should think about becoming a CLAG member also. While talking to their President Shell Fitzpatrick I found out that they have a $25 membership fee and meet monthly, September through May, in the Library at 12 noon with a light lunch, a quick business meeting and then a demonstration. Something else I learned is that they display and sell their artwork in the community at four different locations. Venues include Prosperity Bank in downtown Sattler, Brookshire Brothers Grocery store in Hancock, Tye Preston Memorial Library, and the popular Wildflour North Artisan Grill. Shell says … ALL are welcome, and you do not need to be an artist to be a member of our Art Guild. Come join us!

Got Bricks?

NBAL is embarking on a restoration/repair project on the front and left side of the building. We have several places that are missing brick. We found bricks in the basement for the front façade. We need 4-5 bricks that match the left side of the building (reddish color). If you see any demolition work in your neighborhood, people replacing their flower beds, etc…, please see if the colors match and claim some brick for our project.

Docent Tips of the Month

Please take the time to read the docent manual during your next workday. There is a lot of good information in the manual!

Please remember that ALL info is required when completing a sales invoice. If customers do not want to give their name, please ask for their home zip code so we can track out of town visitors. The name of the person making the sale should be entered at the bottom of the invoice. Please look at the Clover receipt to determine method of payment. DEBIT on the receipt means you circle “debit.” Apple pay is run through one of the established credit companies – the info is on the Clover receipt.

ALL money figures should be written in established form on the sales invoice. Thirty-five dollars should be written $35.00. Multiple errors have occurred because decimal notation was not used and the docent did not add up the correct place value columns.

Your Help is Needed

Please help NBAL manage our resources efficiently. The past two months we have spent over $1000 monthly on utilities. As we head into the searing summer season, please adhere to the policy posted at each thermostat in the building:

  •  During the winter, the setting is 70⁰ during building use and 65⁰ after hours.
  • During the summer, the setting is 75⁰ during building use and 80⁰ after hours.

Please dress for the season so you can be comfortable while using the building.

Where the Wild Things Are

Myra Knapp, Librarian

kattknapp@sbcglobal.net

At this time of year wildlife abounds. Why not sketch or paint our fine feathered or furry friends. Everything you need to get started can be found in your New Braunfels Art League Library.

Here are some exciting books that will get you started: Painting Nature’s Little Creatures 758.1 KOU; Painting Garden Animals 758.1 NEL; Painting Birds Step by Step 758.1 ROU; Wildlife Painting Techniques of Modern Masters 758.1 RAY; or how about Painting Animals That Touch the Heart 758.1 HAR.

There is so much inspiration that can be found in your library. A visit will get you moving into the wonderful world of creating art. Go check it out - the keys can be picked up at the docent desk and your Library is upstairs through the Bower Classroom. Go get inspired!

I moved to NB in Oct 2022 (from Gainesville, TX) after retirement. Grew up as an Air Force brat living in the states & Europe then spent 40 years in Human Resources supporting business/employees in all areas of HR.

I am a display member with the NBAL (Dec 2023) and work in several media (1, 3, 4): encaustic, printmaking and alternative photographic processes being my current “favorite obsessions”. But I’ve also worked in glass (fused/blown/torch), was a contract weaver (custom saddle blankets), paper maker & am now learning the art of bookbinding. My friends say I’m always chasing the “shiny squirrel” in art and they are right. Life is too short to not try it all!

I’m looking forward to supporting the NBAL, the members, the community and guest artist/teachers. I would love to hear suggestions/referrals from members on what they would like to see us do in the future - 2025 calendar is set, 2026 is taking shape with plenty of room to satisfy those artists cravings!
