Abbey and Penny Snuggling

Hoping you all are well!  I don't know about you, but I'm smelling spring in the air, I THINK.  One day it's 75 here and the next it's 20, so honestly, I think "someone" is having their bit of fun with us here in Northern Virginia.  :)

This has been a bit of a challenging month, again.  If you follow me on Facebook, you know I've had my share of sick kids (one had BOTH Type A influenza in December and now Type B influenza just last week.  The doc says we should buy a lottery ticket since it's so rare to catch both types!), craziness, and sad times, too.  We lost yet another fur baby on March 1, just two days before my birthday, so I was using Prep H under my eyes again so I could be seen in public.  :)  This was our little rat friend, Penny the one-eyed rat, part of the dynamic duo of Penny and Abbey (Penny Lane and Abbey Road).  She had Myco (a very common respiratory illness in domestic rats) and also a large mammary tumor.  Most people would wince at having such a pet, or would place the rat in the same category of mouse, hamster, gerbil or the like, but those who have owned rats know it's very, very different.  They're truly like dogs in tiny little bodies - full of love for their owners, social, sweet and smart.  All I'd have to do is call for Penny when she had her "free roam" time and she'd come running to me.  I find it very unfair that their life span is so short (2-3 yrs).  I think I cried more about Penny than for our 15 yr old Aussie Blue, who passed in January.  Something about these little rat friends.  On top of that, we're worried about Miss Abbey, as it's quite obvious how much she misses her sister.  They snuggled with each other constantly, kissed, groomed and muttered little rat speak, so Abbey isn't happy without her Penny.  Think we're going to look into adopting a female rat for her when we feel ready.  Anyhoooo....
