Immanuel E-Newsletter
One of Jesus’ best known teaching methods was the telling of parables, short stories with spiritual meaning. In all, he told over 40. The parables of Jesus have a way of confronting us, making us think about the world, ourselves, and God in new ways.
During this coming 6-week season of Lent we will be ‘Living in a Parable Universe’ at Immanuel. We’re hoping that everyone will make this a season of Bible study, digging into many of these short stories by Jesus. There are 3 ways to do this...

1. Sundays in Lent: Every Sunday we will look at a parable of Jesus from Matthew’s Gospel. Worship will offer time for personal reflection and a deeper dive into the story.

2. Wednesdays in Lent: We will tackle different parables from Matthew and Luke. Several ‘parable’ stations will offer a self-guided journey into each parable from many different perspectives. Stations will include prayer and meditation, art, hands-on activity, games, word association, and more. The stations are intended to be intergenerational. We will begin together in the Fellowship Hall (6:15) with prayer and the telling of the parable, then spend 30 minutes or so experiencing the parable stations, ending together in the sanctuary by 7:05.

3. Small Groups: We have a 6-week small group study “Short Stories by Jesus” by Amy Jill-Levine, a professor at Vanderbilt Divinity School. This is a great opportunity to take up a spiritual practice during Lent. Sign up for one of the many groups meeting at Immanuel, form your own group with some friends or neighbors, or do the study together as a family.

We hope that you will join us in any or all of these opportunities. Find a combination that works for you. If you miss a week, just dive back in the next week! The goal is to grow in knowledge of these stories and the way they speak into our lives.
At the end of this season, as we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday, I pray that we’ll be celebrating Immanuel’s growth in faith through our intentional study of Jesus’ parables. These stories have a way of working deep into our hearts and minds, stretching us as we journey with Jesus. This is the way that God’s kingdom comes on Earth as it is in Heaven.

We are going back to see our Lakota friends at the Oyate Teca Project. Last year we participated in building some picnic shelters and helping them harvest the crops from their gardening program. It was an incredible success for them and for us! This year we will again dive into the Lakota culture and heritage, connect with children and families in the community of Kyle, SD, and learn about the transformative love of God at work in and through us.
The Bells of Immanuel: Rehearses Sundays 9:15AM
The Bells of Immanuel rehearse on Sundays from 9:15 to 10AM downstairs in the music room, if you want to attend the 9:45 service you may leave. Immanuel’s celebrated handbell choir rings recognizable church music, including traditional repertoire, classical sacred literature, and more recent compositions. It is a multigenerational choir and NO musical training is necessary!!! If you can’t commit to every Sunday, talk to Ellen, director, about being a bell substitute ringer! Contact her at ellen.hanson@aurora.org if interested or just show up for rehearsal. You will be shown how to ring and which part to read. Its lots of fun & not too difficult!!
Choir: Rehearses Wednesdays at 6:45 PM
Choir rehearsals will continue on Wednesday Nights from 6:45PM until 7:45PM. Rehearsals will be in the Choir Room and we will be gearing up for music for the Lent and Easter seasons. This is an opportunity to grow your musical gifts and to have good fellowship with your fellow musicians and disciples of the Lord. It is such a blessing to work with all of the incredible musicians here at Immanuel. Experience is not necessary and you are encouraged to make as many rehearsals as you can. Looking forward to seeing a lot of returning faces and new ones, all are welcome.
Praise Team: Rehearses Wednesdays at 8PM
Each week the members of Praise Team faithfully lead worship in song at the 9:45 AM and 11:07 AM worship services. Members also help to lead worship for special services. Weekly rehearsals are on Wednesday nights from 8-9PM! Some musical training would be preferred and members are asked to attend as many rehearsals as possible. Wednesdays - Ignite (Confirmation)
5:30 - 7:30 pm
Our regular Ignite youth group will begin to integrate Pr. Sara into the ‘large group’ teaching time. On the surface, Wednesdays will look and feel pretty familiar. Expect to continue to have fun, build friendships, and learn important spiritual lessons. Confirmation students, on top of Wednesday Ignite, will be expected to complete Worship reports, fulfill serving requirements, and have an experience in summer Bible camp or the Mission Trip. We expect some students to participate fully on Wednesdays who are not on the ‘confirmation track.’ Our hope is that everyone will find Ignite to be a place where we grow in love for God and toward one another - following Jesus every step of the way!
MISSION NEWS
Hearts2Care
We were blessed to have almost 50 members and friends of Immanuel complete one of the two orientations recently offered.  WE ARE NOW READY TO GO and looking for folks we can assist. Are you are in need assistance (or know a member or friend of our congregation) , especially those recovering from an illness, surgery, or are elderly, that unable to provide what is necessary to help them remain in their home, and do not have relatives close by to assist?  If you could you use some (short term) help in the following areas, please fill out, if for yourself, or encourage them to complete an application, and turn it into the church office or one of the pastors:

Errands, Shopping, Light Housework, Meal Preparation (short term), in home visiting or phone calls, transportation (especially for church or medical needs), minor home repairs, minor auto repairs, computer/electronics assistance and/or seasonal needs (snow removal, lawn mowing, raking, weeding, window washing).

Core Team Members: Mike Brooks, Judy and Steve Guy, Marilyn Heiden, Madelyn Killian, Jill and Bob Rosenthal, Evie Schulz and Nancy Williams.

There are certain policy restrictions in effect, especially, for financial costs of repairs, but our volunteers do not expect any reimbursement for their time. If any person wishes to make a contribution in appreciation for services or to aid in providing services, but we suggest that you make a donation by placing whatever amount you wish in an envelope marked "Hearts2Care" and place it in the offering or drop off at the office. Any donations will be earmarked to help those this ministry is serving who may not be financially able to cover   certain expenses.  You may also consider contributing a gift card from a local gas station, grocery or retail store.
Community Connection Meal
Please join us for our Next Community Connection Meal on Thursday, March 21 st from 5:15 - 6:30pm. Remember all of our Community Meals are FREE to those in our community who are hungry, lonely or need fellowship. We would also love for folks to donate their favorite dessert! Please sign up by contacting Lynn Gerlitz at 262-812-9326 or at communityconnections@gmail.com or sign up on the worship card on Sundays if you can volunteer or donate.
TreeHouse Fleece Blanketeers
Looking for an easy and fun mission project to do? Make a Blanket, Make a Difference is what the Wednesday morning quilters are all about and they NEED your help! Their mission is to continue to provide no-sew fleece blankets for the children who come to the TreeHouse! These children range anywhere from a couple weeks old to 17 years of age and have suffered suspected physical or sexual abuse and/or neglect. This can be a traumatic experience for these precious souls and the Tree House staff has found that if they are able to give them a "Lovie" when they arrive, or leave, it helps calm and sooth them while the process is taking place.  If you would like to help with this worthwhile endeavor, many hands make the project go quickly and it’s fun!  Contact Jackie Kuehl for more info. Another way to be involved is to give a monetary donation to help offset the cost of each blanket ($20 per blanket). Donations can be placed in an envelope with "Fleece Be With You" on the outside and can be left with Bethany in the church office. This as an ongoing project. Last year 300+ children were served at the Tree House...that is a lot of blankets. Thank you for whatever you can do to be of assistance to these children.
Lay Communion Visitors
Newcomers welcome to join this important ministry for shut-in members. Pastor Carl is adding new Shut-Ins to the list as he visits them. Please contact Jeri Bozovsky at 203-5400 for more info.   Also, if you have names of members who have indicated they would be in need of a visit please let Jeri B. or Bethany know and they will be added to the list of people enjoying visits from this wonderful ministry.
St. Vincent De Paul (Milwaukee) Soup Kitchen
On Sunday, February 17 th, our last scheduled day to serve at the Milwaukee Soup Kitchen, due to lots of snow and poor roads, we, as a church body, did not drive into Milwaukee. However, four brave souls, led by John Brandes, left from their home and went there directly to serve. John reported back that it was OK…that they had enough servers...a concern since at least six others wanted to go. Later this week I will take the 10 to 12 bags of warm clothing and pants given to complete our mission.  MANY, MANY THANKS to all who served or wanted to serve and to those who gave warm things needed, including another sleeping bag. Our next service date is May 19 thA Carpool leaves from Immanuel at 4pm. We hope that many of you who wish to serve can do so. We are sometimes overwhelmed with the number of “guests” that come with the few of us there to serve them. Your participation in this ministry is greatly appreciated, especially from those served who tell us “May God Bless You”. There is a continuing need for clothing items and personal meal services at that time. God Bless you all, Bob Rosenthal

THANK YOU
+ A Heartfelt THANK YOU for the prayers and the cards that I received. It has been a long seven months of being sick. Hopefully 2019 will be better. A GREAT BIG THANK YOU to Pastor Carl for the visits, communion and your prayers, phone calls, and concern.  THANKS also for all the prayers for Wayne. All was appreciated. God’s Blessings, Elaine & Wayne Vorpagel
+ HO! HO! HA! HA! HA! WHEE! A great BIG IMMANUEL THANK YOU goes out to all the elders who participated in the Valentine’s Day party on Thursday, Feb. 14th! Donna Johnson and her sidekick Pastor Carl banished the winter blues, for a little bit anyway, with their jokes and witty banter. The donuts from Bittner’s and the brownies baked by Dee helped too! About 40 people gathered to socialize and enjoy being out and about. An added bonus was a guided tour for anyone interested in seeing how our “new” building is being put to use by varied and various ministries. A SPECIAL THANK YOU to Pastor Carl, the core team, our wonderful staff members, and all who helped make it happen. Stay tuned for future activities and events! And don’t forget to turn your Elders Rising Surveys in if you haven’t already done so!
