MMHS News
Mandarin Museum & Historical Society
March 2015
Members and Friends,

We are so excited about the Rotary "Laughs for Charity" event in April, and we are featuring it in our newsletter this month. The Rotary Club of Mandarin has selected us to be their headline local non-profit for this annual fundraiser. All proceeds given to MMHS will directly fund the exhibits which will make our one-room schoolhouse a museum!

Please support our efforts by purchasing a ticket and sharing with your friends. It will be great fun and all for the benefit of the schoolhouse. Tickets are going very fast, so please don't delay.

Rotary Club of Mandarin Selects Mandarin Museum & Historical Society as a Beneficiary of Their Annual "Laughs for Charity" Event!

We are very grateful to the Rotary Club of Mandarin  for selecting Mandarin Museum & Historical Society as their headlining local agency for their fabulous Spring 2015 fundraising event, "Laughs for Charity." The Mandarin club holds this event for the sole purpose of assisting non-profits with specific and worthy projects. It is one of many ways this organization reaches out into the community with a philanthropic hand.

We are also very grateful to the Comedy Zone for their generosity in offering this venue for a community benefit and to all businesses, individuals and organizations who donate auction items and buy tickets.

The project that will benefit from funds given to MMHS is the 1889 Schoolhouse, which was recently relocated to Walter Jones Historical Park. We are very grateful to all who have contributed to the purchasing, moving and restoring of this historic building, but it will take more funds to complete the exhibit space and transform the building into a museum of education and inspiration - one that will bring pride to the entire community.  This event will help us do that.

This evening promises to be one of great fun with friends and neighbors, while helping us and Polio Plus fulfill our missions. We ask for your support through the purchase of tickets and your presence at the event. Come and celebrate with us as we move forward with this important project and thank the Rotarians and the Comedy Zone for this generous opportunity.

Rummage Sale on Hold - no longer March 7

Last month we told you that we'd be hosting a Rummage Sale to benefit the schoolhouse expenses. Stay tuned. It had to be postponed until we can enter the building.

Miss Aggie

MISS AGGIE DAY 2015

Miss Aggie Day will be celebrated on March 15 from 1-3 at the 1911 Mandarin Store and Post Office. On this day we celebrate and remember  the impact Miss Aggie had in her community of Mandarin as she served as the Postmistress  from 1928-1964. Have a moon pie and RC cola and catch up with old friends, just as they used to do in this very same place.

Have a good story about Miss Aggie? Come on in and tell us about it.
LOOKING FOR SOME SPECIAL VOLUNTEERS

Of course all of our volunteers are special! We could not exist if it were not for the dedication and passion of the many folks who already give their time  and talent to us in SO many ways. And we thank them from the bottom of our hearts.

But, you know what....we are GROWING. We have many more needs and positions that need to be filled to expand and meet our mission in the community. That is a good sign!

WE NEED PEOPLE TO HELP WITH THE FOLLOWING:
  • website  - we desperately need someone who can do "Wordpress" to enter information into our website
  • volunteer Coordinator - another very urgent need
  • museum docents
  • school tour guides
  • marketing MMHS programs
  • photographer for events and programs
  • assisting with oral histories
  • accessions
  • archives
  • serving on committees like program and events
  • coordinating volunteer involvement
  • public affairs
  • research
  • fundraising
  • grant writing
  • park clean-up
We will welcome you to our team and you will meet some amazing people! Just give Sandy a call at 268-0784 or email your interest to [email protected].

Schoolhouse Reconstruction Progress

It has been 6 weeks since the schoolhouse was moved. The progress has been slower than expected due to weather and some newly found structural issues. But here is a view in case you have not been able to get by lately.

Full House for Sister
Thomas Joseph

What a delightful evening with Sister Thomas Joseph and the other Sisters of St. Joseph who came to Third Thursday Lecture in February. The Community Club was packed to the limit and Sister gave a very interesting talk about the history of the Sisters of St. Joseph and their mission of education in north Florida.

We now have her book, "Beyond the Call" in our Museum Gift Shop.
"Yoga on the River"

"Yoga on the River" is getting more and more popular as the weather warms up. Why don't you give it a try on March 22 - you'll love it. What's not to like about keeping yourself healthy in one of the most beautiful spots in Duval County?

It is  held on the Boardwalk at Walter Jones Historical Park on the fourth Sunday of each month at 9 a.m. This is a gentle yoga class that is for everyone, beginners to advanced, and follows the Kripalu style of yoga. The class, led by Mandarin Museum volunteer and certified Yoga instructor Karen Roumillat. Classes are held outside, so are subject to weather. Bring your own mat. 11964 Mandarin Rd. Walk through the park to the river and the boardwalk along it.

Volunteers Lynn MacEwen and  Shirley McNell welcoming people at the Winter Celebration in December

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our volunteer Shirley McNell. Shirley just started  volunteering a few months ago  and was very active in the Winter Celebration activities.

Shirley was very happy to get involved in her community and she will be missed at MMHS. Our sympathies go out to her family.
Walter Jones Park is a site for this event. March 21 from 8 am to 11. Park in the parking lot by the museum and walk down to the County Dock. Don Carter, MMHS Board member will be there to register you.
