Father Tom's March message
The Vestry is currently comprised of myself (Chair, ex-officio) and the following elected members. Charlie Dickinson (’23), Todd Kodet (’23), LaJuana Bryan (’24), Richard Curtis (’24), Georgia Tachoires(’24), Cojean Herrin (’25), and Anne Towner (’25). 

At the organizational meeting of the new Vestry on Thursday, 10 February, I appointed LaJuana Bryan to serve as Senior Warden, and the Vestry elected Charlie Dickinson to (continue to) serve as Junior Warden and Sally Dickinson to (continue to) serve as Treasurer. A Clerk will be elected at the March meeting.

The Vestry gathered for a retreat on Saturday, 12 February to build relationships and set goals and priorities. The Revd Marla Asson served as retreat facilitator. Issues of sustainability were a central focus of our conversation. Other congregations in our diocese, as well as the diocese itself, are having similar conversations. Ours is compounded by rising commercial rental costs.

As we brainstormed, the following possible trajectories for the future emerged.

  1. Pursue opportunities for marginally increasing income (e.g., recruiting another congregation to share the costs of our space) and marginally decreasing expenses (e.g., finding a way to purchase, rather than lease our space).
  2. Pursue opportunities for collaborating with other congregations (e.g., sharing personnel and programming resources) while simultaneously maintaining our distinct identity, mission focus area, and governance (“collaborating” being the operative word, as opposed to “merging”). 
  3. Re-embrace the model of being a “building-less” congregation, thereby freeing additional resources for programming and mission.

The Vestry looks forward to guidance and direction from our new bishop, the (soon-to-be-“Right”) Revd Elizabeth Gardner and would also like to hear your ideas. Toward that end, we invite you to a congregational meeting immediately following Mass on Sunday, 27 March. We look forward to seeing you there, whether in-person or via Zoom.

May God continue to bless St Catherine’s, and continue to equip us for mission and ministry in South Reno and beyond.

Ordination of The Rev'd Elizabeth Gardner as Bishop of Nevada
In October 2021, Elizabeth Bonforte Gardner was elected Bishop of the Diocese of Nevada. The Ordination of The Rev’d Gardner to the Sacred Order of Bishops in Christ’s one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church will take place on Saturday, 5 March, at 11 a.m. in Las Vegas. Senior Bundles: Let's give generously this Spring to our local seniors in need

We are beginning our Springtime Senior Bundles project for the Life Care Center. The collection will start on Ash Wednesday, March 2, and finish on Easter Sunday, April 17. 

The Center has expressed tremendous gratitude for the ongoing generosity of our parish for bringing some joy into the lives of their patients as they do the hard work of rehabilitation and healing. About 25% of the residents are permanent, the other 75% are working hard to heal and get back to their lives.

The display board and collection boxes will be inside the front door of the church, so you can decide what you’d like to bring, take a reminder card with all the info, and leave your donation in one of the collection boxes on any Sunday during Lent.

Cozy items: warm socks for men and women including non-skid socks; fleece blankets; wheelchair lap blankets (approximately 36x44”) knitted, crocheted or sewn.

Grooming Items: body wash and body lotion for men and women; shampoo and conditioner for men and women; shaving cream; after-shave lotion; hand lotion, toothpaste; toothbrushes (single packs); emery boards.

Personal Items: carry bags for walkers/wheelchairs; stamps; small seasonal items for room décor.

Fun & Games Items: large-print crossword puzzle books; large-print word search books; large-print sudoku books; coloring books; art supplies. 

Fun Food Items: individually-wrapped snack foods like sugar-free hard candy, cookies, and other treats (not necessarily sugar-free).
St Catherine's to host interfaith peace vigil
 
Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish, Baha’i and Pagan religious leaders from all around northwestern Nevada will gather together 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 6, to pray for a peaceful resolution of the armed conflict in Eastern Europe. 
 
This candlelight vigil will include prayers from diverse religious traditions in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Arabic, Sanskrit, Pali, Hebrew and Persian. Together we will pray for peace and an end to the war in Ukraine.
 
All are welcome and encouraged to take part in this event hosted by St Catherine's. Candles, coffee, tea, and snacks will be available.

Baby Bundles ministry: accepting new donations

Your donations are delivered to Trinity Episcopal Cathedral where a volunteer group meets to prepare newborn gift bags. These are then delivered to the Post-partum units at Renown and St Mary’s hospitals to be distributed to families who don’t have everything they need for their baby after they're discharged. Items needed are:

  • Newborn diapers
  • Wipes
  • Receiving blankets
  • Bibs
  • Onesies
  • Caps
  • Socks
  • Cute outfits
  • Crocheted or knitted blankets

If shopping isn't convenient for you, the volunteers will gladly accept monetary donations. Checks can be made out to St Catherine’s with a notation (“Baby Bundles") on the memo line.

Bible study: the Book of Numbers, Thursdays at 10:45 a.m.

Join St Catherine's Bible Study group, which is currently discussing the Book of Numbers. This study group will meet after the 10 a.m. Eucharist service on Thursdays, in person at church.

Lenten Half-Day Retreat: March 12

You're invited to join in on "The Spirit Speaks 3: Where is God in all this?" a half-day retreat at St Catherine's based on the spirituality of St Ignatius of Loyola.

Living Compass Class: Part 2
