In March we have something for everyone-- ukulele classes for adults and teens, a Lessons in Chemistry discussion, crocheting with Girl Scouts, and a virtual visit to the Beer Can Museum. Children have a variety of story times to choose from.

The clothes will be donated to The Sharing Shelf. Lightweight, adaptable, and approachable, the ukulele is a great instrument for beginner musicians. Join instructor Elyse Schreiber for this three-class series, during which we will cover basic ukulele skills including strumming, chords, and finger picking.
Registration is required and participants must attend all three sessions. Attendance is capped at 12, and a waitlist will be kept. To register, please email Tash at ngross@pelhamlibrary.org. If you would like to borrow a ukulele, please indicate this in your email; otherwise, let us know if you will be bringing your own.

β | Stitching Saturdays Special Edition: Girl Scouts | |
Calling all crocheters! Gather your hooks and yarn, and join us on Saturday, March 14 from 1:30-3:30 pm to help us work on our community banner, celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the Battle of Pell. We'll be joined by Girl Scouts making their squares for the community banner project, but all are welcome. Patches will be given to participating Girl Scouts.
Crafters working on their own knitting, crocheting, needlepoint, or other fibercraft projects are welcome to join.
Crocheters of all ages and abilities are welcome. If you are new to crocheting and would like to learn, please email Tash (ngross@pelhamlibrary.org) to make sure he is available to get you started with a mini-lesson.

Please join us to explore Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus on March 21! This engaging and witty novel follows Elizabeth Zott, a brilliant chemist navigating the challenges of science, society, and unexpected fame in 1960s America. Blending humor, heart, and themes of resilience and discovery, the book celebrates the power of science and determination to change lives.
Led by Pelham High School students, this discussion is appropriate for teens and adults and marks the second in our series of chemistry-themed book discussions. In collaboration with MINDSET, Inc. and the Pelham Public Schools, this program is part of the year-long celebration of STEM Pelham Ignites the Elements. Join our resident artist/instructor Sara Mallach this month as we craft beautiful brooches using antique buttons, dyed feathers, fur, and velvet trimmings. Women have worn brooches across the ages, not just as a practical fastener for clothing, but also as a witty and sometimes rebellious fashion statement that exemplifies the character and personality of the wearer. A perfect project for Women's History Month.

April 7 is National Beer Day, commemorating the day that prohibition was ended by the Cullen-Harrison Act in 1933. Get ready to celebrate with this presentation from the Beer Can Museum!
Museum Curator Kevin Logan will share a family-friendly presentation covering the challenges - and innovations - that led to the eventual canning of beer following Prohibition in 1933. An impressive assortment of cans from the museum, including some of the very first beer cans, will be shared, as well as novelty cans, folk art, TV and movie props, and more.

Explore the diverse and captivating world of wild mushrooms! This all-ages presentation, led by experienced mycophile Lisa Solomon, will delve into the surprising variety of colors, shapes, sizes, and even smells found in fungi, challenging common myths along the way. Participants will learn to identify major mushroom types and their defining characteristics, discover essential gear for forest foraging, and review safety rules for collecting and cooking edible varieties. The session will also cover emerging frontiers in mycology: how fungi can help save the world, and will provide connections to local amateur clubs, field guides, mobile apps, and online identification communities.

Join us for a series of ESL classes for adults with Pelham resident, EJ Sepp!
This class is intended for low-intermediate to advanced students who are learning English as a second or foreign language. (No beginners please!)
EJ Sepp has taught ESL for 20 years and is the co-author of English Express New York: A Cultural Reading & Writing Text for English Language Learners.

Join Master Yao-Wah Chan for beginning Tai Chi. He has over 40 years of experience teaching throughout New York City and Westchester and is trained in multiple Chinese disciplines.

Join Lisa and her furry friend Freckle from The Good Dog Foundation for a special kind of Story Time. This time, it won't be adults reading to kids: it will be kids reading to dogs! Young readers ages six and up can sign up for 10-minute sessions, during which they will be able to read to Freckle, Lisa's adorable canine companion. This will give kids a safe space to become comfortable reading out loud.
To reserve a spot, join us at the Library on the day of the program, and see the librarian at the reference desk to sign up for your 10-minute session. We will start accepting reservations at 3 pm (not earlier!). First come, first served.

Join us for our popular Story Time for infants and toddlers outside on our front lawn. Story Time is designed to enhance early literacy skills and features diverse children's books in which all children can see themselves represented... plus we have a lot of fun! Please bring a blanket or lawn chair to sit on. Children must be supervised by an adult at all times. Story Time will be held outdoors throughout the year, but will be cancelled on days when the temperature is extreme, weather is extreme, or if it is raining. You may call the Library when we open at 10 am to inquire.
We are excited to offer outdoor programs for children and families at the Pelham Public Library! Participation in any outdoor activity comes with some natural risks and children must be under the vigilant supervision of an accompanying adult.
