GCL Response to COVID-19

Valley Line West LRT Working Group
We are looking for a volunteer to attend ongoing meetings of "Citizens Working Group - Zone F (Downtown/Groat) + G (Stony Plain Road)" regarding the Valley Line West LRT. This individual would represent Glenora Community League at these meetings (which are currently virtual). They would be expected to report to the GCL Board on a monthly basis and to bring the GCL's concerns and perspective to the Working Group meetings.

Valley Line West LRT chugging along
The Valley Line West LRT is on track to break ground for construction next year. The project has launched its competition to find a contractor to design, build and partially finance the $2.6-billion public transit project. That competition will conclude in December 2020 when the City chooses the successful bidder. Construction is expected to begin in 2021 and last another five to six years. But before then, the City is continuing its preparations — relocating underground utilities, removing buildings from City-owned properties and completing condition assessments of buildings next to the Valley Line West LRT route. Social Distancing, No-Touching,
Glenora Easter Egg Hunt!
April 9-14
This is a fun activity for families to participate in while still social-distancing! We would like to ask families who would like to participate in a community egg hunt to hide a few eggs somewhere that is visible from the front sidewalk of your house. Ideas for locations:
- In your window
- Hanging from the front porch
- In a tree
Please don't make it too hard, children may be tempted to touch an egg that was difficult to find. Eggs can be drawings, decorated bird eggs, plastic eggs, etc!

In order to keep this safe, eggs cannot be touched by any of our 'hunters'. Bunnies hiding eggs should hide the eggs in a place that is visible from the sidewalk in front of the house, but ideally in a place that is difficult to reach for younger children.

If families are interested in participating they should email Jennifer at  jenniferguiney3@gmail.com  with the following info:
1) Their address (this will be shared through publicly as a location in the egg hunt)
2) Where they will hide their eggs
3) Approximately how many eggs they will be hiding

Jennifer will put together:
- a few activity ideas that families can use to engage their children of different ages/abilities, including printable worksheets or colouring pages
- an "answer sheet" for parents' eyes only with the location of the eggs 
- a map showing the houses with the eggs

Families need to email Jennifer to participate by April 6th so I can have it all sent out by April 7th or 8th.  

Once you have received the map, the answer sheet, and the activities, you and your family can start your hunt!

Cumming's Corner: Greetings From your MP
Dear constituents,

I wanted to take advantage of this newsletter to introduce myself as I don’t think that I got to
meet all of you over these past few months. I am James Cumming, your federal Member of
Parliament and my job first and foremost is to represent your voice in Ottawa in the House of
Commons. You might have gotten my constituency mail-outs in your postal boxes so you may
already have a clue as to who I am. Not all MPs use these, but I like their broad reach and they
allow me to receive feedback from constituents, so please feel free to send me comments through
their attached forms.

One of my added roles is to represent and support small businesses across the country as
Conservative Shadow Minister for Small Businesses, and Export Promotion. So, if you are an
entrepreneur having issues with competitiveness, productivity, access to markets and so on,
please don’t hesitate to contact me about it. I truly am grateful to have this responsibility but
ultimately my duty is to my constituents.

This winter, to top it all off, I also was lucky to be able to introduce a Private Member’s Bill
(PMB) in the House of Commons, and I decided in favor of an important topic for our local
economy – namely fighting for our resource sector, and Alberta’s economic potential. My bill,
C-229, asks the federal government to repeal the previously passed C-48, the West Coast
shipping ban. While it has been called by some as grandstanding, I see it as doing everything in
my power as an Opposition MP to stand up for our economic development and access to
markets, and I will not apologize for it.

Finally, a word on what is happening these days in Canada and around the world with COVID-
19. I know many of you are facing uncertainties of all kinds from limited availability for child
care, to economic unknowns etc. If you have any questions about federal assistance, please do

GCL Updates
President
The community has taken on a different meaning for me in the last couple of weeks. At a time when we are being told to keep our distance from each other, I have never felt closer to those in my community. We’ve heard a lot about social distancing but I prefer to call it physical distancing; as many of us are
continuing to be social in very creative ways. Despite our Community Hall being closed, the park shut down and activities cancelled, there are some unique ways that have emerged that have allowed all of us to connect to each other.

We are all hoping that it won’t be long before life returns to normal and we can physically connect again at the park and in the Hall. Until that time, stay safe and strong!!
Sports & Wellness
In our current COVID-19 environment, it is still essential to stay active for our physical and mental health. A healthy lifestyle is your best defence against disease. Physical health has positive impacts on psychological health (and vice versa). Social distancing and good personal hygiene will keep you, and others, safe.
While at home get your workout in and then do your part by making sure that the workout area is clean for the next person.
Please stay active by doing body weight exercises and maybe even "play"a bit with different items that you have around the house (summer tires for shoulder and upper body work plus so much more.. buckets of sand or water to help with some unbalanced resistance - squats/carries etc)... be creative!
Please remember to warm-up (pre-hab movements/mobility work) before each session and also do the appropriate stretching and post workout activities for recovery.
Warmup:
  • Jump rope: 2-3 minutes
  • Jumping jacks: 25 reps
  • Bodyweight squats: 20 reps
  • Lunges: 5 reps each leg.
  • Hip extensions: 10 reps each side
  • Hip rotations: 5 each leg
  • Forward leg swings: 10 each leg
  • Side leg swings: 10 each leg
  • Push-ups: 10-20 reps
  • Spider-man steps: 10 reps

Workout:
  • Bodyweight squats: 20 reps
  • Push-ups: 10 reps
  • Walking lunges: 10 each leg
  • Dumbbell rows (using a gallon milk jug or another weight): 10 each arm.
  • Plank: 15 seconds
  • Jumping Jacks: 30 reps
Soccer
Canada Soccer has been and will continue to closely monitor all COVID-19 developments in consultation with all public health authorities and relevant governing bodies and provide updates by end of April.  Our volunteer community coordinator has been asked to continue building teams in case the season progresses as planned. Pickleball
All Pickleball play is cancelled due to COVID-19.

When Pickleball returns, we have a new night! Pickleball will be available to be played on Thursdays from 6pm to 8pm.

Preschool
Glenora Preschool is a parent owned, parent operated cooperative offering classes for children ages 3 and 4 years old. Classes are held in the Glenora Community League located at 10426 136 St.
Glenora Preschool is a uniquely diverse and inclusive program for children ages three and four. We provide a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment where children can grow to their full potential through:
  • An art based program.
  • Quality programming with a focus on each individual child's needs and interests.
  • Whole child development wherein each child is nurtured emotionally, socially, physically, creatively, and intellectually.
Although classes are not currently in session due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are preparing for next school year as usual. A few spots remain in our 2020/2021 classes. Garden Club
We have cancelled our gatherings and will resume once it is safe to do so. Our topic of discussion this month was set to be seedlings, it is an exciting time to get the seedlings going and started inside.
The gardeners are looking forward to the white stuff melting and visions of massaging the soil and getting it ready for its first root vegetable to be planted. We are still a bit early for this vision, but it will come soon enough. Before we know it our perennials will be budding and things will start to look a little less white/brown and a bit more green.
