MARCH NEWSLETTER
A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR
Happy Women's History (Herstory?) Month!

At this time of year, the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners is busy promoting their annual Legislative Agenda. Please take the time to review the FY22 Agenda at http://mblclegislativeagenda.com/. Grafton has received the first of two payments of around $14,000 in State Aid, which the Board of Library Trustees bank to put towards defraying Library construction costs through the Capital Campaign and cover items of scope of the municipal budget.

Whether you know it or not, state funding for libraries affects Grafton beyond State Aid! The State budgets for library services in seven different accounts in the 7000 category. The MBLC budget provides support for network fees, resulting in a discount for what the Town has to pay to participate n the C/W MARS library network; facilitates statewide delivery, so if we don't own a boo, we can get it for you quickly, inside or outside of our local network; funds the MA Talking Book and Perkins programs for services to the visually impaired; funds The MA Center for the Book programs to support local authors; and of course, pays the MBLC legislators and staff for their advocacy and support services, which includes programs like the Love Your Library Valentines.

Thanks to all who sent valentines about what the Library means to YOU. View Grafton's valentines at https://www.lovemasslibraries.com/library/796/.

We continue to waive fines for overdue library materials. In the absence of a Guilt Jar, members are invited to donate to the Library Gift Account via check to PO BOX 387 Grafton MA 01519, join or donate to the Friends of the Grafton Library, donate to the Capital Campaign or donate to our partner, the Grafton Food Bank, to support their mission to address food insecurity in our community.

Spotlight on Fiction: Amish Romance
Amish romance is a literary subgenre of Christian fiction featuring Amish characters, but written and read mostly by evangelical Christian women. An industry term for Amish romance novels is "bonnet rippers" because most feature a woman in a bonnet on the cover, and "bonnet ripper" is a play on the term "bodice ripper" from classic romance novels

The appeal of Amish romance lies in the books’ G-rated, wholesome nature, a public fascination with Amish culture, and storylines which appeal to an evangelical readership.

Best-selling and popular authors include Wanda Brunstetter, Cindy Woodsmall, Suzanne Woods Fisher, Shelley Shepherd Gray, Patricia Davids, Beth Wiseman, and Beverly Lewis, whose 1997 novel The Shunning paved the way for the current Amish fiction boom.

An Amish romance novel is guaranteed to have a happily-ever-after that will efficiently and tidily resolve all the loose ends and bring the hero and heroine together, and for a few moments, you may feel like all is right and just and makes perfect sense. An Amish romance could be the balm you need in an often-troubling world.

In The Hope by Patricia Davids, Amish widow Ruth Mast wants nothing to do with the handsome man from her past who just returned to Cedar Grove. Ruth learned the hard way that Owen Mast’s restlessness always causes trouble. But when a little Amish girl appears on Owen’s porch, lost and afraid, Ruth has no choice but to help the man who only ever causes heartbreak…

All Owen wanted was to make amends with Ruth and her family. He never imagined that little Grace—or the strange mystery surrounding her—would bring him closer to Ruth. Or that a tender and unexpected attraction would quickly take hold of them both. But even a wandering heart can grow roots…when there is hope for love.

We circulated 293 museum passes to 20 attractions in 2020. Two museum are doing e-tickets. We just renewed Garden in the Woods and Roger Williams Park & Zoo. We have tried to keep on top of closures and reopenings dues to COVID-19. https://graftonlibrary.org/passes/

The Friends are planning a Spring Fundraiser in lieu of the Egg Hung, and a Spring Book Sale on the Common.
