Notes from the Manor
presented by
March, 2022

WHY “COLONEL LONG”?

Why not “Mayor Long” or “Mister Long”?

It was a reflection of his long and varied association with his military service, and he preferred to be addressed as “Colonel”.

William Frew Long followed the tradition of his family in active military service. Starting in 1917, Colonel Long served twenty months in the Air Service of the United States Army, attaining a commission as Captain. He transferred to the Army Air Corps, flying early Jenny planes and commanding the 414 Pursuit Squadron.

When the war ended, he continued his involvement in the Air Service Reserves. He was promoted to Major in 1919, Lt Colonel in 1927, and Colonel in 1938.
In 1941, he was recalled to active service, serving as Army Specialist with administrative duties, expediting production and distribution of supplies, and serving as civilian personnel relations officer. In 1944, he became general manager of the National War Labor Board.

Colonel Long was also instrumental in promoting what would eventually become Cleveland Hopkins Airport. This came about when the Army sought a location for training of officers and pilots. Aircraft manufacturer, the Glenn Martin Company, 16800 St Clair Ave in the Collinwood area of Cleveland, offered their air field location but it was deemed too small and too close to residential areas. A location in Warrensville Heights was also checked and the same issues prevailed.

A site in Berea was recommended by Cleveland City Manager, William Hopkins. Colonel Long eagerly supported this and urged the city to purchase the land. Colonel Long even contacted the Chief of Staff, 414 Air Pursuit Squadron. An ordinance was passed by Council to lease some 350 acres for government use as a flying field. This eventually became Cleveland Municipal Airport, being renamed Cleveland Hopkins Airport in 1951.

Information for this article was taken from This Place Matters: A Biography of Colonel William Frew Long and the Story of Longwood Manor, written by John Cassmer, member and past President of Longwood Manor Historical Society. Copies are available for purchase.

Longwood Manor features an open house on the last Sunday of the month from 1pm to 4pm during the Spring, Summer, and Fall months.
