On a personal note...

I have been putting together a European Tour that I am just giving you a heads-up about. It is still forming, so stay tuned. I am teaching Mind in Motion this Month, the 2nd time – YaYYY!

We are going to start another section of the Composing Emergence Mentorship in April. However, because I will be traveling through much of it, I will divide its 12 sessions up between 4-5 months. I think it will start in April and go through early August meeting only 2-3 times per month while I am on the road. It will have the same number of meetings as those courses that I do within 6 weeks and also contain two private meetings with me. These meetings have proven to be so extremely important and enriching for folks. The class size will remain at 8 people. Let me know soon if this interests you and I will get the dates set so that you can book them in.

Also, one of the most meaningful things I have done in a while was to teach a class to the Contact Improv community in Ukraine to help them deal with the stress of war. It was focused on the heart having a home, stability with the earth through feeling the small falls, and on aligning on an axis between the earth and the universe. Embodiment is crucial. Moving in the way dancers do is critical to well-being and essential to all of our relationships. I have Alex Postnikov to thank for making that point terribly clear in this moment of war with Ukraine. I realize that those of us who dance MUST rise up in support for our brethren around the world who are suffering.

An Aside...

Everything comes and goes because life is unstable, impermanent and in motion. One of the Buddhist precepts uses a term, “taking refuge” to describe a kind of relationship one has within oneself, one’s practices, and one’s community as they live within the bodymind. The sense of “entrusting,” means trusting in one’s capacity to arrive at understanding – entrusting one’s self to stay with it until understanding arrives. That takes commitment and care.

Certainly, one finds shelter, home, but also a place to clean, to care for, and to be responsible to… and yet, this is a place to dwell. When I understand selfhood as a multiplicity, this sense of the self I am responsible to extends into the very places I am attentionally residing. So, I would like to explain my relationship to the earth in the way that Thich Naht Hanh might explain it (as read in his work Being Peace). I entrust myself to the earth, and also … (this is the important part) the earth entrusts itself to me. The relationship of dwelling as one is reciprocal. So I could also say “I take refuge in my heart, and my heart takes refuge in me”. This is the reciprocality of relations when the self extends beyond the limits of the flesh.

This is a dance in motion, never fixed. Never bound.

Relational Intelligence

**No class on Wednesday, March 9**

These next four weeks are exciting. This month I am going to focus on creative practice, specifically on dance improvisation. To do this work, we will play with how we understand a score. Taking time to begin, time to remember, time to shape and play, time to feel the choreographic sense and sensibility of our movement moments.

Join us for Relational Intelligence as an art.

Check out the aside, it contains my favorite "non-lecture" by

the brilliant poet E.E. Cummings.

Class resumes on Wednesday, March 16

Further Aside...

Poetry is Being – Not Doing, E.E. Cummings

(From a series of lectures he gave at Harvard University from I: Six Nonlectures, Atheneum.1968)

"So far as I am concerned, poetry and every other art was and is and forever will be strictly and distinctly a question of individuality…poetry is being, not doing. If you wish to follow, even at a distance, the poet’s calling (and here, as always, I speak from my own totally biased and entirely personal point of view) you’ve got to come out of the measurable doing universe into the immeasurable house of being. Nobody else can be alive for you; nor can you be alive for anybody else. Toms can be Dicks and Dicks can be Harrys, but none of them can ever be you. There’s the artist’s responsibility, and the most awful responsibility on earth. If you can take it, take it–and be. If you can’t, cheer up and go about other people’s business, and do (or undo) till you drop."

I read this as a call for each of us to break out of the confines of our cultural indoctrinations. This is the moment to do that work. Now.
