The Dr. Ifeanyi Onyeji Resident/Fellow Inclusive Excellence and Equity Award 2026
With collaboration from the UC Davis Health Graduate Medical Education, Office of Medical Pathways, and Resident Medical Staff Committee
Resident/Fellow Physicians are involved in inclusive excellence and equity efforts at various levels within our institution and play a vital role in ensuring these values are upheld at UC Davis Health. We have recognized five (5) areas of inclusive excellence and equity which we believe Resident/Fellow Physicians have the time and resources in which to engage meaningfully. However, we acknowledge that there may be others.
Eligibility:
- Nominators may be a peer, colleague, attending, or faculty members who know the Resident/Fellow Physician nominee
- Nominators can also self-nominate (if currently a UCDH Resident/Fellow Physicians)
- Resident/Fellow Physicians nominee must be a current UC Davis Health physician and be registered at UC Davis Health the following academic year
- The nominee’s described experience must have been demonstrated during the 2025 - 2026 academic year
Instruction and Evaluation: Use this form to submit for each individual you nominate. Please be thoughtful and thorough in your responses. Nominees do not have an opportunity to add any narrative or context for committee considerations. Our committee will approach the review of the nomination holistically, considering all of the five areas for which we are requesting information. Describe efforts to the best of your ability in each of the five areas (if not applicable, you may write N/A). Consider discussing the nomination with the nominee to better understand their activities and the context in which they occur. Context is everything and understanding any challenges or accelerators to this important work will assist our holistic review.
All nominations are evaluated by a committee of Deans and Directors from Graduate Medical Education, Office of Medical Pathways, and leadership from the Resident Medical Staff Committee. The last day to submit nominations is Sunday, April 5, 2026 at 11:59 pm. Link to nominations: https://ucdavis.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_8qzQmY3tYwAbrAa
For questions regarding submissions, contact Eva Lee, Resident Recruitment & Engagement Specialist, at eclee@health.ucdavis.edu.

UC Davis Health clinical programs are invited to request Inclusive Excellence training sessions designed specifically for resident and fellow physicians. These training sessions provide a broad foundation that can be applied across specialty programs. Topic requests may include a wide range of subjects such as implicit bias, microaggressions, inclusive communication, structural racism in healthcare, cultural humility, and allyship, but are not limited to these areas. Each session fosters reflection, open dialogue, and provides practical strategies to promote equity and inclusion within clinical learning environments. In addition to the selected topic, presentations also includes an overview of Graduate Medical Education resources and insights into the equity landscape at UC Davis Health to support the professional development and training experience of residents and fellows.

For March consider cultivating moments of reset and refocus when clinical responsibilities feel overwhelming, or it feels hard to confront all that life demands of you.
Try the 30-Second Physiologic Reset between patients: inhale 4 seconds; hold for 2; exhale 6–8 seconds; repeat 3 times and then drop your shoulders and unclench your jaw.
Consider the Doorway Intention where you pause before the next patient and ask yourself: What does this patient need most right now? Who do I want to be in this room? When you are feeling a bit scattered, ask yourself: What is the single most important task right now? What can wait? What is one small next step?
A 5-4-3-2-1 Micro-Grounding exercise can help after a difficult encounter where you notice: 5 things you see; 4 things you feel; 3 things you hear; 2 things you smell and 1 slow breath. If your emotions are hard to navigate, try The 90-Second Emotional Wave Rule: notice it; name it (“This is frustration.”); breathe; let it crest and fall.
Finally, a Midday Values Anchor can be refueling when you ask yourself: Why did I choose medicine? Who am I serving? Values-based reflection restores meaning and can protect against burnout. Finally, try the End-of-Day Cognitive Closure where you write tomorrow’s top 3 priorities; acknowledge one thing that went well and mentally say: “Workday complete.”
If you hit a moment when taking time to reset does not feel deserved, explore these infographics on cultivating self-compassion as a gift to yourself. Whatever approach you choose, the power of a few moments to reset and refuel can be critical to your well-being and if you need more support on how to do that, your wellness team is here for you.

📋 ACGME Compliance Tip of the Month
🔎 Spring Check: Participating Sites & PLAs
March is a great time to conduct a quick review of your Participating Sites in ADS.
✔ Confirm all required rotation sites are accurately listed
✔ Verify that Program Letters of Agreement (PLAs) are current, and you have a PLA
for each site (reviewed at least every 10 years)
✔ Ensure faculty listed at participating sites are accurate
✔ Double-check rotation assignments match what is reflected in ADS
Proactive reviews now can prevent citations later — especially before Annual Updates or site visits.
Small compliance check-ins throughout the year make accreditation cycles much smoother.
