March 2021 Newsletter
Together, we will create a vibrant, intergenerational cohousing community in Novato, California where we know our neighbors well and live more sustainably.
Restoring the Wetlands
On a beautiful Sunday in February, 19 members of C Street Village Cohousing gathered to help restore the wetlands at Bel Marin Keys. Guided by Christina McWhorter, Executive Director of the Novato Baylands Stewards and Cricket Swannucci, Restoration Operations Specialist, we heard an overview and history of the wetlands and the restoration project given by Christina. After our orientation, we jumped right in and started planting—Salt Grass (Distichlis spicata), Alkali Heath (Frankenia salina), Jaumea (Jaumea carnosa), and Gumplant (Grindelia camporum).

Over 10,000 native perennial plants have been outplanted this winter in the Bel Marin Keys Unit V Project in the San Francisco Bay Estuary, and we planted over 350 of them. Wetlands around the Bay are important because they provide habitat for wildlife including endangered species, help mitigate/reduce the impact of sea level rise, and sequester atmospheric carbon to help reduce greenhouse gases. All this returns more of the Bay to its natural state.

Restoring the wetlands also brought the members of C Street Village Cohousing together in person for the first time in a year, and it was wonderful! We have been seeing each other via zoom, but is no substitute for an in person gathering. We wore our masks, stayed socially distant, practiced good hygiene and enjoyed each other’s company immensely.
Fifth Annual Gratitude Dinner
"If you concentrate on finding whatever is good in every situation, you will discover that your life will suddenly be filled with gratitude, a feeling that nourishes the soul."
- Rabbi Harold Kushner

C Street Villages Fifth Annual Gratitude dinner was held Saturday, January 30th. This year we did a virtual gratitude dinner via Zoom due to COVID restrictions. Even in these times of COVID, our C Street Village community has much to be thankful for --from health, housing, and food, to the opportunities to be in nature, welcoming new pets and adventures into our lives, and becoming part of a cohousing community.

We started with a 15-minute happy hour, followed by dinner. After dinner we organized ourselves into breakout rooms for a more intimate sharing of what we are grateful for. We did an activity titled “Gratitude Prompts” (See below) Fun was had by all, as we shared and strengthened our C Street Village community.
Member Spotlight
Welcome, Dale!
Having been part of dining co-ops in college and then living in a collective in Berkeley, Dale saw a flyer advertising a talk on community and housing. She attended what was possibly the book tour launch for Katie McCamant and Chuck Durrett's first book "Cohousing: a Contemporary Approach to Housing Ourselves" and has wanted to live in cohousing ever since. A choc-a-holic (dark, of course), Dale loves her dog, petroglyphs, succulents, and most things outside. She aspires to a sustainable life (growing up during the energy crisis of the 1970s started her down this path - she became a solar energy crusader at age 9). She is confident she has found her tribe with Marin Cohousing.
