Happy Tsagaan Sar!

Literally translated as "White Moon," Tsagaan Sar is the Lunar New Year in Mongolia and one of its two biggest holidays.

Congratulations to FIRE's medical director, Dr. Munkhjargal Ayurzana for her wonderful award from the Ministry of Health.

Thank you to everyone who helped with the matching contribution. We did not make the January 15 deadline. But we have been given until March 31 to raise the remaining $7,635.

Please read below for more information about all this and more!

Dr. Munkhjargal Ayurzana (Jagaa), FIRE's medical director and the Mongolia country director, was recently recognized as "Best of the Health Sector" by the minister of health at the Mongolian Ministry of Health. This award is given based on achievement and colleague recommendations.

We are honored to have had Jagaa leading our team in Mongolia since 2010. Her hard work, tireless diligence, and cheerful character have helped propel FIRE to new levels and its best accomplishments yet. Congratulations and thank you, Jagaa!

Mongolian New Year

Tsagaan Sar is the Mongolian lunar new year celebration which often coincides with the Chinese and Tibetan new year. It lasts fifteen days with the primary celebration taking place over the first three days. This year Tsagaan Sar began on February 19.

During Tsagaan Sar, families gather to renew and solidify ties, particularly between the younger and older generations, and to repay debts and resolve disagreements. Their days are filled with visiting relatives' homes and welcoming visitors into their own homes. People dress in their best dells (traditional Mongolian clothes), tell stories that share traditional knowledge, play games, and practice customs that reinforce Mongolian culture, solidarity, and continuity. Each family will prepare traditional foods, including hundreds of buuz (mutton dumplings).
Matching Contribution Challenge

In December, FIRE began a matching contribution campaign. We needed to raise $20,000 by January 15 to receive a matching $40,000. We raised $12,365. It was a remarkable and inspiring showing of support. However, it left us a bit short. We have until March 31, to raise the remaining $7,635.

Please maximize your donated dollars, triple the amount, and keep FIRE moving forward and upward!! Make your donation by March 31, 2015, so that we may continue to make a difference.

You can donate securely on-line here. Checks may also be mailed to FIRE / PO Box 22187  / Flagstaff, AZ / 86002.

Meet the FIRE Team

In addition to an award winning medical director, FIRE has an outstanding accountant and office manager, Baasantsetseg Baatar (Baasa). Baasa started with FIRE almost 4 years ago. Her attention to detail, cool head, and immense professionalism helps keep FIRE operating at maximum capacity and in compliance with Mongolian laws. In addition to her busy work with FIRE, Baasa is a busy mother and grandmother. We are tremendously grateful to have Baasa's help with steering our team in Mongolia.
