On March 7, 2019, Region 3 held a Legionella seminar "It can't happen here!" "Don't be fooled." "It can and has happened." IREM, Industry Partner, David Hollingsworth of Arc Water Treatment Company of Maryland, Inc., Vinny O'Reilly from The Metro Group, Inc. out of Boston and IREM Maryland Chapter's own Jenn O'Dell from Habitat America were guest speakers. David Hollingsworth began the day by giving an overview of Legionella, how to detect it, and where it grows in buildings. Jenn O'Dell then shared her personal story about how four senior buildings Habitat America LLC managed became infected, the handling of the crisis and the water management procedures put in place as a result of the outbreak. Vinny O'Reilly closed out the seminar discussing the (7) elements defined by ASHRAE 188 procedures and shared a case study about the emergency disinfection of a 100 year old building riddled with legionella. The fifty plus property management professionals who attended this seminar asked engaging questions and everyone came away with a better knowledge of what legionella is, how to treat it and what needs to be included in a water management plan.
