President's Message
Alex Krone,  CPM®
President, IREM Maryland Chapter

Celebrate the Spring chickens: the average age of a Property Manager holding a CPM designation is 53 years old and we want to change that!

It's time to celebrate our younger IREM members and to continue developing the next generation of IREM professionals. You can help by inviting young professionals to IREM meetings and encouraging their involvement in all aspects of Chapter participation. With your help, we can ensure the succession of our great organization and continue to develop our global IREM community. If you know someone under 30 years of age that you would like to recognize for their contributions in the field of Property Management, you can nominate him/her through this link https://www.irem.org/30under30. The deadline is April 1st.

Please join us in congratulating our own Maryland Chapter Past-President (2015), Teika Haymon, CPM®, ACoM.  Teika recently received the Foulger-Pratt, 2019 Sid W. Foulger "Pursuit of Excellence" Award.  She is only the third woman and the first African-American to receive this prestigious award.  Teika expressed, "I am truly humbled to be the 2019 recipient of the Sid W. Foulger Pursuit of Excellence Award. The highest regard given in our company! We live by our core values and principles and it reflects in how we conduct ourselves both professionally in business and personally in life. Being a part of something meaningful and great is the icing on the cake."

As if that wasn't enough to celebrate, Teika was also recently promoted to Commercial Portfolio Manager, Commercial Management where she is responsible for managing Foulger-Pratt's Downtown Silver Spring commercial assets totaling 1.9M SF.  Teika continues to serve on IREM Maryland Chapter's Executive Council.  She also chairs the Ethics Committee, and is a member of the Ethics Inquiry Board and Governing Council for IREM Headquarters, based in Chicago.

Legionella Recap Legionella
On March 7, 2019, Region 3 held a Legionella seminar "It can't happen here!" "Don't be fooled."  "It can and has happened."  IREM, Industry Partner, David Hollingsworth of Arc Water Treatment Company of Maryland, Inc., Vinny O'Reilly from The Metro Group, Inc. out of Boston and IREM Maryland Chapter's own Jenn O'Dell from Habitat America were guest speakers. David Hollingsworth began the day by giving an overview of Legionella, how to detect it, and where it grows in buildings. Jenn O'Dell then shared her personal story about how four senior buildings Habitat America LLC managed became infected, the handling of the crisis and the water management procedures put in place as a result of the outbreak. Vinny O'Reilly closed out the seminar discussing  the (7) elements defined by ASHRAE 188 procedures and  shared a case study about the emergency disinfection of a 100 year old building riddled with legionella.  The fifty plus property management professionals who attended this seminar asked engaging questions and everyone came away with a better knowledge of what legionella is, how to treat it and what needs to be included in a water management plan.
