April has arrived so quickly, it's hard to believe! We want to express our gratitude to everyone who showed their support at the Fanfare Quilt Show for our sister guild, Heritage Quilters of Huntsville. The meeting with Brandy Maslowski, The Quilter on Fire, was a success with a great turnout. Congratulations to all our members who participated in the show and received ribbons for their quilts!

Now, we're shifting our focus to the 2024 Self Portrait Challenge. This month, we have guest speaker Sherrie Cahill and next month, Barbara Carlson, both experts in portrait art quilting. They will be teaching classes at various shops in the coming months for those interested in learning. We may even be able to get a special class put together for our own members if we have enough interest. Please email me at suebartlow@gmail.com and let me know if you are interested.

I’ve personally enjoyed creating portrait quilts using techniques from Sherrie's Pet Portrait class and Laura Heine quilts. They are truly a fun and creative experience. Speaking of portrait quilts, my next Cherrywood Challenge contains a portrait….so keep an eye out at our May meeting for a display of Cherrywood Challenge quilts by any of members. If you've never tried creating one, I encourage you to give it a shot - they are a unique challenge with a limited color palette. The deadline to enter the Poppies Cherrywood Challenge is May 15th this year so you still have time.

Visit https://cherrywoodfabrics.com/ for details. Sweet Home Quilting is our premiere Cherrywood shop in town and the only one in Alabama as well!

April also bring the AQS Paducah Quilt Show and I do know that several local quilters in our guilds will have their quilts on display to be judged! Good luck and congratulations for getting juried in! If you plan to attend the show, consider supporting our local quilt shops first, especially for machine purchases. Many local shops can offer competitive prices, so be sure to inquire before you make a decision. We are fortunate to have a variety of shops in our area to cater to different needs and preferences. Without our shops, we wouldn’t be where we are today!

See you on April 11th!
