We are approaching a quarter of the way into 2023, but Roxbury Main Streets has accomplished a great deal, with much more to come.

In February, we partnered with the City of Boston’s Small Business Development Office to host four free small business workshops in Nubian Square for local business owners and entrepreneurs. The workshops were a success, and Roxbury Main Streets connected with many current and aspiring business owners. Many thanks to Roxbury’s neighborhood small business manager, Mr. Duamarius Stukes, and the City’s Economic Opportunity and Inclusion Office. You can read more about the workshops in this newsletter.

Roxbury Main Streets also continues to work with the Boston Public Works Department to keep Roxbury clean and vibrant, giving special focus to Nubian Square. Thank you to Public Works Administrator Robert Lewis, who collaborates with us and other partners to develop tactics for maintaining a beautiful Roxbury. Much appreciation to the Department of Public Health and Boston Police Department’s District B-2 for supporting the homeless and providing services to those battling addiction and illness.

In January, Roxbury Main Streets welcomed our co-op student from Northeastern University, Delaney Murray. Ms. Murray is in her final year at Northeastern and joins us as a communications, fundraising and development associate with prior experience working for a nonprofit, a newspaper and a local government. You can read more about Ms. Murray below and what she has contributed to Roxbury Main Streets thus far.

We also encourage you to check out Roxbury Main Streets’ upcoming events. Much appreciation to our partners who have committed to sponsoring the third annual ‘Bury Funny Stand-Up Comedy Fundraiser on May 13. However, we still need help. If you would like to sponsor the comedy show, more information is below. We are excited to announce the event’s sponsors in the coming weeks.

On April 8, Roxbury Main Streets is also hosting our second annual free children’s Easter Egg Extravaganza in Nubian Square. We are doubling event attendance this year, and we are very excited to offer our Roxbury kids and families even more activities and resources. Thank you to Carrie Guscott of Rio Grande River Associates for planning and contributing to the event for another year. If you would like to sponsor or volunteer for the Easter event, please reach out. More details below.

Stay tuned for more information on our Women’s Entrepreneurial Breakfast, which will be scheduled for later this spring. The event will include special guest speakers, networking opportunities, great food and much more. And later this month, Main Street America — with help from the City — is hosting its national conference in Boston! For more details and to register, click here.

Thanks to our aforementioned city partners in public health, public works, Boston Police, as well as inspection services, the MBTA Police and community organizations, we are seeing immense environmental improvements in Nubian Square. If you would like to help revitalize Roxbury’s commercial district, community partners are welcome to join our weekly Nubian Square business walkthroughs on Thursdays, starting at 11:30 a.m., in front of the Nubian Square bus terminal Dunkin.

The Nubian Square Task Force — made up of even more community partners — works to solve problems in Roxbury that require large-scale collaboration, such as housing the homeless, improving public safety, treating substance use and more. The task force meets on the first and third Wednesdays of every month at the Bruce C. Bolling Building starting at 1 p.m., and community members are welcome to join.

And many more environmental improvements and developments are on the way. Roxbury Main Streets is dedicated to cultivating a mixed-income economy for Roxbury, which will provide more jobs for the community, generate growth for small businesses, create opportunities for residents to build generational wealth and more.

As always, thank you to the community, our partners and the Roxbury Main Streets board of directors for your dedication and commitment to our organization and Roxbury as a whole. Revitalizing Nubian Square takes a village, but our collective efforts have proven invaluable. I am very excited for what’s to come.

Sincerely,
Robert M. George, Executive Director

We need your support.

Roxbury Main Streets is hosting its third annual ‘Bury Funny Comedy Fundraiser. We invite you to join us as a sponsor of this special event to support Roxbury’s small businesses.

Last year was a huge success, and we raised $50,000. This year, we want to top that, with a target goal of $100,000. Through our various programs, we have improved the lives of residents, small businesses and community organizations.

Here are some examples of how Roxbury Main Streets has helped to make a difference:
  • Co-organized the first and second annual Roxbury Restaurant Week.
  • Collaborated with the Department of Public Health, law enforcement, community organizations and local businesses to reduce illegal cigarette sales and illegal open drug use, and to identify homeless and mental health services.
  • Provided technical assistance to Roxbury businesses through the City of Boston’s Small Business Development Office.
  • Assisted local businesses in securing emergency funding and technical assistance to upgrade point-of-sale systems and online presence to adapt to the changing market.

We ask that you consider a level of sponsorship that will help sustain our small businesses in Roxbury. Please see below.

Respectfully,
Robert M. George, Executive Director

February Small Business Workshops in Nubian Square
Mayor Michelle Wu of Boston Logo

Roxbury Main Streets partnered with the City of Boston’s Small Business Development Office to host a four-part series of free small business workshops throughout February. The workshops were a success, with an average of 25 attendees each session, comprised of small business owners, entrepreneurs and aspiring merchants.

The workshops were held at the Bruce C. Bolling Building in Nubian Square and led by instructor J Gustavo of the Gustavo Consulting Group, which helps small businesses “realize and leverage their full potential and navigate the ever-changing world of business through distinctive, lasting and substantial improvements in their performance metrics,” the company’s website reads.

At the first workshop, held on Feb. 7, Gustavo helped business owners improve customer service practices. The event saw great turnout, with 34 attendees coming from all over Roxbury and neighboring areas.
In the customer service workshop, Gustavo covered the difference between a business owner and an entrepreneur, and how to solve business problems and provide 5-star customer service. After Gustavo taught how to create an elevator pitch, a Roxbury small business owner shared his pitch with the group.

“When you want your green in a flash, call Green Flash,” said Duane Osborn, who owns Just T and Original Proud Bostonian in Nubian Square, and is developing a cannabis company called Green Flash.

The first workshop featured refreshments from Dudley Cafe, a local business in Roxbury, owned by a board member of Roxbury Main Streets, Solmon Chowdhury. After attendees fixed themselves plates, they went into the presentation space. One of those attendees was Zoe Petty.

Petty, 25, is the creative director of a small business in Roxbury on Columbus Avenue called House of Culture. The clothing store was opened in Greater Boston in 1991 by her father, Patrick Petty, who began his career as a wardrobe stylist after studying fashion in London.

“After this, I am going to work on my elevator pitch,” she said.

Once she learned the difference between a business owner and an entrepreneur, Zoe Petty said she considers herself an entrepreneur.
“An entrepreneur tries to solve problems in their community,” she said. “I am a second-generation Black business owner, and I have the opportunity to bring e-commerce and media skills to House of Culture. That sounds like an entrepreneur to me.”

Zoe Petty also attended the financial operations small business workshop on Feb. 21 in preparation for taking over the family business one day. The finance workshop was catered by Soleil, a small and family-owned business in Nubian Square selling Southern soul food. The other two workshops focused on inventory management and adopting e-commerce practices.

Gustavo’s biggest advice for small business owners — other than coming up with elevator pitches as good as Osborn’s — was to open an account with Quickbooks to help with bookkeeping and other accounting needs. Depending on the paid subscription plan, the Inuit service offers income and expense tracking, payroll management, tax services and other features.

While the small business workshops in Nubian Square have wrapped up, see below for a similar upcoming event.

Meet Roxbury Main Streets' 2023
Northeastern Co-op Student

In early January, Roxbury Main Streets welcomed Delaney Murray to the team as a communications, fundraising and development associate. Murray attends Northeastern University, which is funding her position with us until late June through its cooperative education program.
Murray will graduate in December with an undergraduate degree in journalism and political science. She has professional expertise in and enthusiasm for public relations and communications. Murray focuses her skills on improving government offices and nonprofit organizations.

"Policies and grassroots efforts can transform lives, but only if we listen to the needs of the people," she said. "I am deeply committed to understanding the challenges that communities face and conveying their needs to the organizations that can provide support. It is a privilege to serve Roxbury in this capacity, and I am grateful for this opportunity."

Murray joins us after she worked as an assistant public information officer co-op at the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office. She said her time in San Jose, California, reaffirmed her interest in working with law enforcement and government agencies, and writing speeches, press releases and biographies.

Before moving to Boston for college in 2020, Murray served as the Student Hunger Strike Force coordinator for the local branch of the Neighborhood Food Project in her hometown, Medford, Oregon.

“That was my first experience working with a nonprofit, and I have wanted to return to the sector since,” she said.

Murray can be found working at the Starbucks on Newbury Street every weekend, a company she has worked with for close to four years. Murray is looking forward to devoting her passion and energy to one job after graduating, as she has worked three to four jobs while taking classes for the last five years.

In her short time with Roxbury Main Streets, Murray has already identified numerous new fundraising partners, connected with small and minority business owners and expanded our communications practices. She is currently conducting policy research for Roxbury Main Streets and helping plan our upcoming fundraisers and events.

Welcome to Roxbury, Delaney!

Mayor Michelle Wu Announces Citywide Permanent Outdoor Dining Program
Mayor Michelle Wu City of Boston Logo
On Thursday, February 16, Mayor Michelle Wu announced the City of Boston’s Permanent Outdoor Dining Program, in coordination with the Office of Economic Opportunity and Inclusion, the Streets Cabinet and the Disabilities Commission. The permanent program creates a predictable, streamlined process for business owners that will expedite application review and allow for annual renewals. It incorporates the activation of public space enjoyed during the temporary program, but addresses issues such as barriers to accessibility and concerns from public safety officials.

The application to participate in the permanent program will be made available in March, with the goal of restaurant patios opening as early as May 1. The new program will include a monthly fee for all participants to help fund efforts to further expand outdoor dining more equitably across the City.
