KEEPING AN EYE OUT

Famed “Zippy” cartoonist Bill Griffith takes pride in being the great-grandson of William Henry Jackson (1843-1942). Griffith, whose full name is Willaim Henry Jackson Griffith, has collected photos and recounts the adventures and creativity of his grandfather and namesake in his book Photographic Memory: William Henry Jackson and the American West.

In the 1870s, Jackson roamed the West, photographing its natural wonders, including one of the first photographs of Old Faithful geyser in Yellowstone. His photographs would help convince Congress to establish Yellowstone as America’s first national park.

Jackson's photos also found a ready market with viewers eager to see America’s stunning natural wonders in three-D using stereoscopes. These devices had two eyepieces and a slot to hold cards with two photos of the same scene but taken from slightly different angles. The cards were set in a support that could be adjusted depending on the viewer's eyesight, creating a three-dimensional experience. Stereoscopes became a wildly popular source of entertainment in the mid-1800s and into the 1900s.

Viewers craved the latest pictures to pop into their scopes and share with friends.

Enjoy the stereoscopes on display in the Museum's Ansbaugh Auditorium and take a peek through the once-popular devices for a glimpse into the past.

Our 2026 Season is in full swing, and our Events Calendar has several great things for you and your family, like the Family Fun Day, the Arizona Gold Mining Experience, and the Cave Creek Museum Presents series. And if you’re really adventurous, take a look at the Gold Fever Jeep Adventure, a fun and pleasurable trip down the backroads just a few miles from downtown Cave Creek, but it feels like being in Arizona way before there were modern conveniences like electricity and telephones.

All of this brings you a historic look at where we live our day-to-day lives, all made possible by a group of people who realized there’s an important story to be told. We need your help so we can continue to tell these stories – if you are not already a Museum Member, please consider joining. As with most community non-profit organizations, we need your continued financial support to pay the electric bill, maintain the building, and pay our very small and very hard-working staff. Thank you for being a part of the Cave Creek Family!

See you at the Museum!

Pat O'Brien

Dear Friends,

It is March and although we barely experienced winter, spring is in the air! A time of renewal, growth and newness. We have seen a great deal of all three here at Cave Creek Museum.

The building of our Collections Storage Wing is complete. Currently, our Collections Committee and Dream Team are assessing the interior shelving needs of our archived material. The next exciting step will be to prepare the collection’s objects for safe transfer from our offsite storage units to our museum grounds. This is something that has been on many of our wish lists for a great many years.

Dreams and wishes do come true.

A very important item on our 2023 Strategic Plan was the hiring of a development professional to guide us into a healthy and sustainable financial future. The achievable goals of the Strategic Plan require the expertise of a seasoned fundraiser to take our organization into that future. So, in this month’s letter I am excited to introduce you to our new Development Specialist Jo Novelli-Blasko.

In January, the Search Committee invited Jo Novelli-Blasko to join the small but mighty CCM staff. We were impressed by Jo’s background and experience working with non-profit organizations. She is the right person to help our museum build meaningful and attainable growth.

Jo was formerly the Director of Fundraising and Audience Development for the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra, in southwestern Pennsylvania. As a consultant, she’s also provided technical assistance to clients in western Maryland including a member-owned food cooperative and a food bank.

Back to the topic of growth and newness, we are holding our annual fundraiser, Miners' Dinner, at Harold’s Cave Creek Corral. The owners have raised the bar with the remodeling of their back patio. Creating an outdoor concert arena and event space in true Creeker style. The move allows us to expand our guest list and host our dearest friends in one of our town’s most popular local landmarks. Harold’s has a wild history as storied as our town itself! We are thrilled that our largest fundraiser will now add to that Creeker history.

Our Board of Directors, faithful volunteers and small but fearless staff hope to welcome many of you to this year’s Miners Dinner. It will be a night of historic western hospitality, great grub in a beloved local landmark!
