After the latest rain fall there is no doubt that now is go time in the garden. We are busy receiving several new deliveries each week. Our nursery is filling up with specialty perennials, succulents, flowering shrubs and trees- many, many beautiful options! These springtime bloomers have fresh foliage pushing out from those once dormant branches, it is just beautiful!

Tips for gardening in another dry year Resist the temptation to over water and over fertilize this spring. Established plants can use this early growing season to root deeper into the earth in search of water, unless you are constantly providing water from the surface. In nature when a plant doesn’t get much rain water, it needs to use its energy to bury its roots as far as they can in search of water and it throws out much less new green growth- the new growth is what is the thirstiest. If you choose to use high nitrogen synthetic fertilizers, the result will be a lot of new growth that will require you to use more water. Switching to organic fertilizers will keep your plants more healthy and growing at a more natural pace. Mulch, mulch, mulch! Anyway that you can decrease the amount of sun exposure that your bare soil gets will help retain water, whether its bark, straw, gravel or cobble- it creates an isolating layer that helps keep water from evaporating out of the soil and away from plants Open your mind to drought tolerant plants. Whether its California natives, desert plants, Australian plants, and South African plants- there is a lot of exciting flora that comes from regions of the world that have extreme heat and little to non existent precipitation in the summer.

Upcoming orders This week- Our first order from Grubb and Nadler out of San Diego county. Lots of unusual drought tolerant plants! Also, we have just received another great round of conifers from Iseli Nursery, and lots of large specimen Japanese Maples and the timing is perfect! The fresh new foliage is just beginning to push out. Later this month- Oh my! A huge order of Japanese Maples in small sizes- we should have over 500 to choose from of over 75 varieties.

The overseas shipping troubles that you might have heard of the last few months have meant a lot nurseries do not have much pottery going into spring. In our case the opposite is true- and we’ve received a years worth of pottery in six weeks! Months of delays on our fall orders have collided with our early spring orders, and we have now have more pottery than we ever have!

Water Drums These water drums were a staple for us 10 years ago, but we stopped stocking them because our manufacturer could never consistently make ones that worked correctly. The new ones we have are from a new manufacturer and do not have the same flaws. One thing is for sure though, they need to have a pump with a flow of close to 200 gallons per hour- any more than that and they will leak.

Peaches Says March To Dos -The temps are warming. It's a good time to start fertilizing with E.B. Stone Organic Fertilizers -Prune and fertilize Camellias (after bloom)  -Spring is a wondrous time of year that brings much growth and re-emergence, both undesirable and desirable. Keep weeding it's an ongoing battle but worth it! -It is now time to sow many flower and vegetable seeds. Check out our huge selection of Botanical Interest Seeds next time you come in
