March On By The Religious School!

It's hard to believe how fast the year is going and March is no exception! With so much on our calendars this month, it's no wonder. Take a look below and see all that has been going on in the Religious School this month.
The 4th-6th grade students have played games with Morah Evelyn, our Shinshin Shir has taught the students about her native Israel, all students have had a music class with Music Man Matt, and the younger students have enjoyed cooking pizza hamentashen with Paula. Our K-2nd grade students celebrated Purim with their Milestone dinner and service and the 7th grade students went to the Hebrew Union College Soup Kitchen.

Sixth graders playing Hebrew twister and race around the Alef-Bet. Students were divided into two teams and had to find the letter that was shown to them. After they collected all the letters they had to put them in the correct order. Fifth graders played the Great Alef-Bet race.

Outside The Classroom:
Learning with Shinshin Shir, Music with Matt the Music Man, and Cooking with Morah Paula

Shir, an Israeli high school graduate, is with us from the Shinshinim program and has deferred her army service for a year to offer herself as an ambassador of Israel in service to the Jewish people. She teaches our students about Israel through dance, music, and pictures. Matt the Music Man works with our students through music and helps prepare them for their grade's Milestone Services. Morah Paula cooks with our students once a month to serve up delicious Jewish recipes.

K-2nd Grade Purim Milestone

The K-2nd grade students celebrated Purim with their Milestone dinner and service. Many of the students and their families came dressed up in costume for the festivities and the students did a wonderful job leading the service. Lots of fun was had by all.

For over 20 years, the HUC-JIR Soup Kitchen at the New York campus has guaranteed a weekly meal for our homeless and hungry neighbors in the Washington Square area. The student-run Soup Kitchen personifies the central role that social justice plays in the life of the College-Institute. It is a tangible way that we fulfill Isaiah's prophetic call to share our bread with the hungry and bring the homeless into our house. The Soup Kitchen provides a nutritious meal to approximately 100 guests every week. The Soup Kitchen creates an intimate and comforting atmosphere by serving our guests at their tables and engaging them in conversation. The HUC-JIR Clothing Closet distributes free seasonal second-hand clothing, shoes, and portable hygiene supplies.

Chloe Siegel held a bake sale on Monday, February 4th for her Mitzvah Project. She brought in nut-free treats including frosted cookies, brownies, cupcakes, munchkins and lollipops and sold them each for $1 to the students. Chloe raised over $240 for Birthday Wishes, a non-profit organization in Long Island which brings birthday parties to children in local homeless shelters. Chloe has been baking birthday cakes for these children in her spare time for the past several years, but for her Mitzvah Project, she wanted to bring girls her age special gifts. It is fitting because Chloe’s actual Bat Mitzvah falls on her birthday. So, she took the money she raised, added some of her own money, and shopped for makeup palettes, perfumes, lip glosses, brush sets and even fuzzy blankets for the girls. Chloe said, “As I become an adult in the Jewish religion, I recognize the importance of helping others and giving back. It makes me feel good, and I hope to do more in the years to come.”

Ashton Klar, Logan Grotas,
and Lemmy Mashkevich

Ashton Klar is a Religious School student who worked with the organization Feed My Starving Children. This is a non-profit organization committed to God’s starving children, hungry in body and spirit. Funds for ingredients are donated, volunteers pack the meals, and then are donated to Feed My Starving Children partners worldwide.
Ashton and his family worked together with 700 other people, including 100 from the Klar Leadership Academy from the College of Business and Innovation at the University of Toledo, packing 200,000 meals over the course of two days.

Logan Grotas and Lemmy Mashkevich are working hard towards making Mitzvah Day one to remember. They decided to work together and collect toiletries for people who are less fortunate or homeless. Everyone feels better and more confident when they’ve had the time to be able to take care of themselves and by creating toiletry kits for others, Logan and Lemmy are helping to make this happen.
You too can help out by bringing in any unopened toiletries by April 30th. Then on Mitzvah Day, Sunday May 5th, you are invited to help assemble the toiletry kits to be distributed. Toiletries being collected include shampoo, conditioner, bodywash, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, mouthwash, and combs.

Hevra & Hineni students will earn 10 points for attending this event.
