Austin Whitehead and Carter Thomas, former POLI 7700 students, attended GEDI’s Intensive Economic Development Training Course in 2025.

GEDI Meets Students at the Intersection of Classroom and Community

While GEDI staff typically provide training and certification programs in the workplace, it is important for us to be a bridge to connect college students to careers. GEDI Associate Director David Mixson is an instructor for courses designed to help entrepreneurs and small business owners increase their success, but since 2020, Mixson has also served as Auburn University faculty, teaching the POLI 7700 course, “Economic Development and Competition”. This course, which is required to earn the graduate certificate in economic development, gives students a comprehensive understanding of the key components of economic development and lets them apply their knowledge to address a real-world community challenge. Read more about how David Mixson’s class introduces students to possible careers here.

Vaccine theatre team - using student theatre to address low immunization rates among older adults

Pharmacy and Theatre collaborate to address vaccine confidence in older adults

Auburn University’s Harrison College of Pharmacy and the College of Liberal Arts, home to the Department of Theatre and Dance, have partnered on an innovative project using live performance to boost vaccine confidence among older adults. Through Mosaic Theatre Company’s original play A Little TLC, students and faculty combined storytelling, research and community engagement to spark dialogue about recommended vaccinations. The performance at Pebble Hill, supported by Auburn University Outreach, included a Q&A with health experts and pre‑ and post‑survey data collection. Early results show strong audience engagement and meaningful conversations that may help expand this approach to under‑vaccinated populations across Alabama. Read more about this collaboration.
