Project Updates

Deer Lakes Ecological Assessment and Action Plan is Complete!

We are thrilled to share the results of the Ecological Assessment and Action Plan for Deer Lakes Park! This comprehensive study evaluates the park’s natural resources and ecological assets and recommends an implementation plan for improving the environment of the park. We extend our gratitude to the Caroline Fredricka Holdship Charitable Trust and FedEx for funding this project, and to our partner, Allegheny County.

Settlers Cabin Entrance Enhancements

We are excited to announce a new project at the Settlers Cabin Entrance that will transform the landscaping to create a more welcoming and sustainable gateway for all visitors. This project was a recommendation from the Ecological Assessment and Action Plan for Settlers Cabin Park and includes tree plantings designed to enhance the park’s natural beauty while also helping to reduce stormwater runoff. Thank you to FedEx for providing the funding to complete this project! Work is expected to begin in the spring.

Marshall Island Improvements

We are thrilled to share another new project in partnership with Allegheny County, the Marshall Island Beautification Improvement Project in North Park! Landscape enhancements at Marshall Island will include removing invasive species and diseased trees both on the island and on Pearce Mill Road’s shoreline to help open views and eliminate hazards; removing a retaining wall, and removing soil which has been mounded on the central lawn area to create a gentler slope for passive recreation such as picnicking, as originally intended by Paul Riis. Thank you to the Laurel Foundation for providing the funding for this project!

Park 'til Dark Update

Earlier this winter we asked you for feedback on our annual Park ‘til Dark event. Based on the feedback we received, it became clear that the event needed to evolve to better serve our community. Therefore, we are excited to introduce a special, public tree planting event, which was identified as the most impactful element of past Park ‘til Dark gatherings. This tree planting directly supports our core mission and offers a unique opportunity to engage with dedicated park users. At Park 'til Dark on Saturday, May 17, we will be planting 100 trees near the sites of several of our park projects in South Park – like the Cascades, the Outdoor Classroom and the Paul Riis Trail. Stay tuned for registration and details!

Ways to Support

Give a Gift in Honor of Someone this March!

There are moments in life when we wish to pay tribute to those who have touched our lives in profound ways. There is no better way to celebrate their birthday or legacy than by making a positive impact in their name to a cause that matters to them! This month, we encourage you to make a donation in honor of someone dear to your heart who loves the outdoors in our region as much as you do.
