Hawaii Bridging Aging and Developmental Disabilities Grant Update
The Hawaii State Council on Developmental Disabilities received a grant from the National Association of Council’s on Developmental Disabilities. We are working in partnership with multiple community and state organizations to bridge some of the barriers we have seen in how to obtain information and increase knowledge about aging and developmental disabilities.
Current Initiatives:
1) Fridge Magnet with information on how to contact the Aging and Disability Resource Centers
2) A training from the National Task Group on Intellectual Disabilities and Dementia Practices will be held in November 1-3, 2023, for self-advocates, parents/caregivers, nurses, social workers, physicians, and allied health professionals.
3) An internship program for students aged 17 and up on Kauai and Maui. To intern in an adult day health program to gain experience and knowledge of adults who have a developmental disability. This is a great opportunity for students who are interested in pursuing a career in nursing, education, psychology, social work, or the medical field.
Goals and Objectives for the students include learning:
1) About different communication techniques (Visual aids, Sign language, Non-verbal behavior)
2) How to modify an activity and implement 1 activity in (art, music, physical exercise, self-advocacy, or another area of participant interest)
3) About self-advocacy and Developmental Disability Awareness Month
4) About issues and barriers individuals with developmental disabilities face daily and how that would relate or impact your future career path.
