Thing is, in all its glory, there’s a lot in there to manage.

Some of us old timers – me included – remember the day when taking care of such things was easier. Those were the days when changing spark plugs, oil and lower unit solution was just about all that had to be done.

That’s why my recent preaching about getting the vessel ready for the rapidly-arriving boating season is more important than ever.

QUESTION & ANSWER

QUESTION: WHEN SHOULD I START, AND WHAT SHOULD I BE LOOKING FOR WITH SPRING STARTUP?

ANSWER: Most fair-weather boaters begin preparing for the season in March. That’s when we start seeing requests to de-winterize boats and perform spring service.

For those who prefer to handle it themselves, start by making sure your battery is fully charged. Do a thorough visual inspection to ensure no animals have made nests or chewed any lines during the off-season. When you start the engine, check carefully for leaks and make sure it comes up to operating temperature. Before leaving the dock, test your shift and throttle to confirm everything is functioning properly.

If we perform your spring check, we provide a detailed 16-point inspection checklist signed off by the technician and given to you for your records.

ZIPWAKE SYSTEM INSTALLATION 2020 23’ REGULATOR

This month, our service team completed an exciting upgrade on a 2020 23’ Regulator — the installation of a new Zipwake dynamic trim control system.

For those unfamiliar, Zipwake is an advanced auto trim tab system designed to help boats plane faster, run more level, and deliver a smoother, more stable ride. It replaces traditional tabs with fast-reacting “interceptors” that automatically adjust in real time.

Planning & Prep
Zipwake provides detailed installation templates and step-by-step guidance, making layout and positioning precise. As with any performance upgrade, preparation is critical. Surfaces must be perfectly level, previous mounting holes are properly filled, and everything is carefully prepped before installation begins.

Smart Technology
At the heart of the system is a central processing unit that controls the interceptors. It reacts in fractions of a second to boat movement, adjusting automatically to maintain optimal trim.
The control unit with display is mounted as close to the vessel’s centerline as possible. Its internal GPS tracks position and motion, making constant micro-adjustments while underway.

Sea Trial Results
After installation, we conducted a full sea trial — and the results were delivered.

The Regulator planned approximately five seconds faster than it did with factory tabs. During hard turns, the boat stayed noticeably flatter and more stable, improving overall ride quality and control.
