Spring Has Arrived–Time to Explore the 9/11 National Memorial Trail!

With warmer weather and longer days ahead, now is the perfect time to get back on the September 11th National Memorial Trail. The season brings renewed opportunities to remember, discover, and connect in events that honor the spirit of resilience and unity.

As spring kicks off, key trail sections and facilities are reopening, making it easier than ever to walk, run, or cycle in honor of the heroes of September 11, 2001. A highly anticipated highlight for many trail users is the reopening of the Big Savage Tunnel–a 3,291-foot marvel that traverses the rugged ridges of the Allegheny Mountains along the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) Trail. Historically, the tunnel closes for the winter months to protect its structure from freeze-thaw cycles and typically reopens in late March or early April, depending on weather conditions. This year, it officially reopened on Monday, March 24, signaling the start of peak trail season for hikers and cyclists.

Complementing the tunnel's reopening, the Meyersdale Area Historical Society will open its restored Western Maryland Railway Station Visitors' Center and Museum on April 1. Operating daily from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., the center serves as an ideal rest stop, offering insights into the region's rich history and its connection to the GAP Trail.

Spring is the perfect time to take advantage of everything the 9/11 National Memorial Trail has to offer. Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or just looking for a scenic walk, there’s no better way to enjoy the season while reflecting on the meaning of this historic route. See you on the trail!

Expanding the 9/11 National Memorial Trail: A New Connection in the Works

Momentum continues to build for the 9/11 National Memorial Trail with a major step forward in Pennsylvania. Last month, stakeholders gathered in Tamaqua, PA, to discuss the feasibility of a proposed 30-mile trail connection from Pottsville to Jim Thorpe. The meeting, led by Senator Argall, his staff, the Alliance, and other key partners, focused on how this new segment would enhance outdoor recreation opportunities and provide economic benefits to local communities.

During the event, Senator David G. Argall spoke about the significance of the project and the positive impact it could have on the region. In recognition of his leadership in securing a Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) grant to support the 9/11 Trail’s development, the Alliance presented him with a commemorative 9/11 National Memorial Trail challenge coin. This expansion effort marks an exciting step toward strengthening the trail’s connectivity and ensuring its lasting impact for future generations. Stay tuned for more updates as this project moves forward!

Progress on the 9/11 National Memorial Trail Through Valley Forge

The September 11th National Memorial Trail Alliance is actively working with representatives from Valley Forge National Historical Park and other key stakeholders to develop the 9/11 National Memorial Trail through the park.

A primary focus of this collaboration is the planning and implementation of signage within the Park’s boundaries. These signs will identify the trail and provide wayfinding guidance for visitors, ensuring a seamless and meaningful experience as they navigate this historic route.

While there is currently no set timetable for completion, the Alliance remains committed to steady progress and will continue working with all stakeholders until the project is realized. Stay tuned for updates as the Alliance moves forward in honoring and preserving the lives lost on September 11, 2001, through the development of this significant trail.
