Costa Drama/Tech Takes
Top Prizes at
Fullerton Theatre Festival!
Congratulations to Mira Costa Drama/Tech for winning the Sweepstakes Award, as well as numerous 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishes among all the competition categories at the Fullerton College High School Theatre Festival, which took place at Fullerton College on Friday and Saturday, March 23rd-24th. Costa competed against dozens of schools from Southern California in a wide range of theater competitions, including Tech Olympics, musical theater scenes, monologues, comedic and dramatic scenes, and comedy improv. All four Costa Orchestras take top honors at Long Beach Festival!
For the first time ever, four Mira Costa orchestras participated in a Festival event, and Philharmonic, Sinfonietta(the newest orchestra), Symphony and Chamber Orchestra each earned a “Unanimous Superior” rating for their performances! “This does not happen automatically, nor does it happen every year for Mira Costa,” said Mr. Peter Park, director of the Mira Costa Orchestra program. Costa Boys Volleyball
Undefeated in League Play!
Mira Costa Boys Volleyball faced Peninsula High School and Redondo last week. All three Costa teams swept Pen and Redondo in straight sets.
The big match of the week was Varsity’s re-match against Redondo. Costa lost to Redondo in the Best of the West tournament just two weeks ago and was ready to avenge that loss. Costa fans filled the gym to help cheer the team on.
Badminton March Updates!
The Badminton team competed against 4 other teams in the Arcadia JV Tournament They placed as follows:

Congratulation to Girls Varsity Swim Team for taking
1st place at South Bay Invitational!
Girls Varsity takes 1st Place!
Last week, the Costa swim team competed in the South Bay Invitational against 11 other teams from Santa Monica to the north, San Pedro to the south, and La Canada to the east, including its league rivals Redondo and Peninsula, among others. Over 700 swimmers competed in the 3 day, prelims/finals meet, the largest in meet history, with the Varsity girls and Frosh/Soph boys teams claiming victories!   READ MORE
Jacob Haim, qualifies for CIF diving!
Jacob Haim, Sophomore, competed on Saturday, March 24th representing Mira Costa at his first dive meet of the season at the Mission Viejo High School Invitational. Jacob needed a score of 300 to qualify for CIF and scored 436.15 points placing 2nd. His next meet will be Saturday, April 14th at the Santa Margarita Invitational in Orange County.

Essentially Ellington Regional Festival, Indoor Drumline and Winterguard Competitions
The Jazz 1 ensemble left on March 24th to attend the Essentially Ellington Regional Jazz Festival at the Mesa Arts Center in Mesa, Arizona. They will perform the music of Duke Ellington and other Big Band performers on March 26th and receive feedback from noted Jazz professionals before heading home. In April, the Jazz 1 and Jazz 2 bands will attend the Fullerton Jazz Festival. READ MORE
Boys Golf updates for March!
Several members of the Boys Golf Team volunteered at the 3rd Annual Good Swings Happen Junior Golf “Fore” Life day on Saturday. The free event, hosted by the Lakes at El Segundo, was attended by over 200 young golfers from around the greater community.  READ MORE

Girls Lacrosse updates!
After falling to Glendale 10-5 on March 13th, the Lady Mustangs Varsity Lacrosse team bounced back with resounding wins over La Canada (16-6) on March 15 and Culver City (14-5) on March 21. Monday’s game against cross-town and conference rival Redondo ended in 14-6 loss and moved Mira Costa to second place in the Bay League with a 1-1 conference record and 6-3 overall record. Upcoming games include a home game on Wednesday against Peninsula at Mira Costa at 4pm. Come cheer on our Lady Mustangs!
Cathedral Concert a big success!
The Mira Costa Choirs hosted its annual Cathedral Concert on March 20th at St. Cross by the Sea Episcopal Church in Hermosa Beach. The Advanced Women’s Chorale and Vocal Ensemble were joined by the Biola University Chorale under the direction of Dr. Shawna Stewart. All the choirs joined for a casual meal prior to the final rehearsal and concert, getting the time to meet each other and share their love for choral music. Girls Basketball celebrates season!
The Girls Basketball team celebrated their season at the End of Season Banquet held at the Crown Plaza Redondo Beach. The evening included a wonderful pasta dinner, a speech given by the well respected coach, Paul Westhead, speeches by the captains of the Frosh/Soph, JV and Varsity teams. It was an emotional night for seniors, Kira Escovar, Haley Herdman and Kelli Toyooka, as they said good bye to the team they have been on since Freshman year. Woodbridge Invitational Track and Field Event – New records for Costa plus a new Stadium record!
On Saturday March 24, 2018 The Woodbridge Invitational was held at the brand new Portola High School Stadium. All first places became Stadium and Event Records and Mira Costa got to set quite a few! READ MORE
Distance Track has outstanding performance at
New Balance Meet of Champions!

Coach Renee Williams-Smith: This is one of the largest distance meets in the country, with high expectations, and it did not disappoint. The team is very excited for where they are at this time in the season. Racing started at 7am, and went through the day finishing at around 9:30pm – with a sole focus on the 1600m, 3200, and 800m distances. The Girls achieved 28 personal bests, 4 golds, 3 silvers, and 2 bronzes. We had 7 girls double PR all while training through this phase of the season.

Mira Costa Boys Tennis is off to a tremendous start!
The Varsity team is 10-0, and the JV team is 5-0. The latest D1 CIF ranking put Costa at #41. A couple of the highlights so far include a historic win over #2 ranked Peninsula, and the Varsity team attending the BNP before their match against Palm desert!

Eclectic Ensembles
Rocks the house!
On Friday, March 23rd, the Costa Band and Orchestra programs put on their 3rd annual fundraiser called Eclectic Ensembles. After a catered Italian dinner in the Costa Cafeteria, attendees were treated to a live show in the Small Theatre. Twenty diverse acts performed music from classical to contemporary. There was also a raffle, which raised money for both programs. Thank you to everyone who participated, attended and volunteered.

MBX Summer School Registration and MBX Flex Registration is OPEN
Registration for academic courses and summer athletic programs are now open for all grades. Register for the grade your student will be entering in the fall. Space is available in all classes!*

2018 MBX Summer School dates are:
Session 1: Monday, June 18 – Friday, July 6
Session 2: Monday, July 9 – Thursday, July 26

Classes will run Monday to Thursday, except for the week of July 4th when classes will be held Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
Academic courses meet from 8 am to 1:30 pm.
