North Burial Ground Walking Tour

19th Century Providence & the Lippitt Legacy: A Historical Walking Tour of North Burial Ground

Saturday, April 11, 1:00 - 2:15 PM

The Lippitt family’s legacy in Providence extends from public service to historic preservation. Deeply engaged in civic and political life, family members founded the Rhode Island School for the Deaf and ultimately preserved their home as a place of public enjoyment.

Join Providence Cemetery Director Annalisa Heppner and Lippitt House Museum Director Cathy Saunders for a walking tour of Providence’s oldest municipal cemetery. Explore the people and issues that inspired, worried, and sometimes divided the Lippitt family and their contemporaries while also learning about the preservation challenges of historic buildings and landmarks. Walking through North Burial Ground’s historic landscape and monuments, encounter activists, craftsmen, and physicians and see the range of ways that people commemorate their loved ones. Discover which memorials have endured the passage of time and what it takes to preserve them.

This event is part of the Semiquincentennial Celebration to commemorate the Rhode Islanders who have impacted the last 250 years of United States history.

Tickets are available at: https://www.preserveri.org/calendar.

Tickets are $10 per person. Tickets are $5 for EBT Cardholders (SNAP benefits recipients).

In Case You Missed It!

Lippitt House Museum was thrilled to host Heather Pouliot Kisilywicz on February 26 for a special program, Discovering Ancestral Journeys to Rhode Island. Heather shared not only her expertise on Rhode Island’s immigration history, but also practical tools to help everyone better trace their own family’s ancestral journeys.

If the post-blizzard chaos kept you away from your screen, fear not! Lippitt House Museum has got you covered! You can watch the recording of this online program here.  If you used any of the tips and tricks Heather shared at this event to trace your own family’s ancestry to Rhode Island, share your story and tag us @lippitthousemuseum.
