HB 1501
(Nevarez). This bill will re-authorize LPC, LMFT, SW and psychologist licensing boards and administratively house them at a newly created Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council.
HB 1501 will be heard in the House Public Health Committee will on Wednesday, 3/13/19. Use our
talking points
to develop your comments but speak from your experience. This model was unanimously passed twice by the Texas Sunset Commission and passed unanimously by the House Public Health Committee last session. We need everyone to make these calls.

New MFT Rules effective March 7, 2019
The Texas State Board of Examiners of Marriage and Family Therapists’ (board) adopted rules were published in the March 1, 2019 edition of the Texas Register and become effective March 7, 2019. The Texas Register and current rules are available on the Texas Secretary of State’s website at
https://www.sos.state.tx.us/texreg/index.shtml. A courtesy copy of the rules is also available from the board’s Rules-Regulations webpage at

Call for Papers! Special Issue of the
Journal of Professional Counseling: Practice, Theory & Research
on Best Practices for School Counseling
Proposal Submission Deadline March 15, 2019

We are seeking submissions related to:
- Best practices for school counselors
- Research related to the efficacy of comprehensive school counseling programs
- Creative interventions in school counseling
- Innovative models for integrating mental health professionals into campus school counseling program teams
This special issue is anticipated for publication Fall 2019. If you are interested, please submit a one-page proposal describing your potential manuscript by

Call for Reviewers for the Journal of Professional Counseling: Practice, Theory & Research
The executive editor for the
Journal of Professional Counseling: Practice, Theory & Research (JPC), the official journal of the Texas Counseling Association, is currently accepting applications for positions on the journal editorial review board team. JPC is an indexed, semi-annual scholarly publication, aiming at providing clinical, theoretical, and empirical guidance to counselors, educators, researchers, and other mental health professionals. Qualifications for the board include a graduate degree and licensure in a counseling, a record of scholarly publications in peer-reviewed journals, and a commitment to providing prompt and comprehensive reviews of approximately 3-5 manuscripts annually. Becoming an editorial reviewer is a great way to: Impact and guide the profession, build your resume/CV, grow your name and brand in the counseling profession.
Individuals interested in applying are asked to include (a) a cover letter outlining their interest, relevant experience, and reasons for applying and (b) a current CV or resume.

Texas OnCourse Leader Fellows
Apply to become a Texas OnCourse leader fellow! This two-year fellowship recognizes, develops, and rewards school-level leaders in the field of college and career advising.
Applications close on 3/18/19.
Texas OnCourse leader fellows serve as virtual and in-person support on college and career advising and instruction for their colleagues across the state. Fellows earn up to $10,000 over the two-year fellowship, and leader fellows’ schools receive a $5000 stipend.

What Brings You Joy?

I was listening to a documentary on Gaia TV the other day and the speaker mentioned children. He was saying that children come into the world in a perfect state of living in the present moment, full of JOY. As counselors, if you sit all day listening to the tragic, traumatic lives of troubled people, you get a triple whammy dose of the dark side of life. How do you shake it off? What brings you joy? Try some of these:
- Close your eyes for a moment and think about the smallest thing in your life that you are grateful for. Breathe deeply and soak in the gratitude. Allow the feeling to spread throughout your body.
- Go into a room and dance to a great song! Turn up the music and go for it! Let your body move and allow joy to invade your spirit once again.
- Go outside and take a walk. Take in the visual beauty of the blue sky, the shape of trees, and the sounds of birds or crickets chirping.
- Clean your house and then sit in the sparkling fresh space. Allow the joy to overwhelm you.
- Watch children at play in the park and allow yourself to feel their innocent joy.
- Turn on YouTube and search for the funniest videos and laugh your heart into a joyous state.
Most importantly: remember to PLAY every day
!
