Georgia: A large donation from a generous soul
Georgia, a 6 year-old in the first grade, came in to the ClearWater Conservancy office last week with her dad, Jason.
She announced that “she gets $6 a week: $2 to spend, $2 to save, and $2 to give.” Then she promptly produced an antique canning jar with a wire latch and glass lid top filled with $56.10, six months' worth of Georgia's 'to give' funds.
She asked that her donation be evenly split between Slab Cabin Run, Millbrook Marsh (Connections) and Thompson Woods (forest restoration).
Georgia, when asked why she chose to donate to ClearWater explained,
"I really like Slab Cabin Run and Millbrook Marsh. I'm glad they're there. I donated to help make them better places."
|
|
Sincere thanks to Georgia for her donation, and for volunteering at last year's Watershed Cleanup Day. If you're inspired to make a positive impact on your community because of her story, please send a us a
quick note. We'll share the continued impact of Georgia's story in future enews issues. Thank You!

Slab Cabin Run Initiative Update
A little more than $2 million has been raised since ClearWater Conservancy launched the Slab Cabin Run Initiative on October 28, 2016. These funds came from the State College Borough Water Authority, local municipalities, and individual donors who generously supported this effort.
If you know someone or a group that might like to learn more about the Slab Cabin Run Initiative, please contact
Deb Nardone or
Kevin Abbey to arrange a presentation. We are happy to come and speak to your group and appreciate any opportunity to share the details of this essential conservation effort. Our community has a unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to leave a lasting, positive impact on our region that will be cherished by future generations. Thank you for taking every step possible to ensure the Initiative succeeds this year.

Welcome aboard Tim Gould, Water Resources Specialist!
Tim Gould has joined the ClearWater team as our new Water Resources Specialist. Tim is a Penn State graduate student finishing his MS in Ecology. His assistantship with Dr. Robert Brooks found him streamside, studying woody debris dynamics in riparian corridors. Tim is no stranger to ClearWater, as he served as volunteer co-chair for the 2016 Watershed Clean Up Day and has assisted the Water Resources Monitoring Project with a number of field work tasks over the past year.
Tim’s role at ClearWater includes the management of the Water Resources Monitoring Project, including year round collection and management of water quality and quantity data in the Spring Creek Watershed. Additionally, he will manage our outreach and education programs with the MS4 partners, including Watershed Clean Up Day and our Rain Barrel Workshops. You can contact Tim at

Improving Health by Going Back to Nature
by Kelleen Lanagan
Studies continue to find that being outside and in nature is linked to many mental, physical, and social heath benefits in both adults and children. Getting outside and enjoying nature is a refreshing activity that people can do to recharge. It is why some go for hikes to clear their heads, and it is why many people flock to national parks over vacations. People not only desire nature when given a choice between natural and urban landscapes, we actually need it.
