10 Things Employees Wish Their Bosses Said More Often
HR Morning | Michele McGovern | February 17, 2023
Do employees leave work feeling appreciated and respected? Or do employees wish their bosses said more to make them feel that way? There’s a good chance they aren’t hearing what they need to. Just 31% of employees say they feel valued for the work they do, a TINYpulse survey found. And it’s not because employees don’t do good work. And it’s not because their direct bosses don’t think their employees do good work.
Often, the problem is many front-line managers (and probably some people at the C and VP level) don’t naturally know what to say or how to show it.

Why More People Want to Work in HR Now
Fast Company | By Pavithra Mohan | February 21, 2023
As human resources has evolved into a more strategic role, the field is becoming more attractive to all kinds of workers. But will that improve its reputation? When Jennifer Kim decided to pursue a career in human resources some 15 years ago, it was a surprising choice for a driven college graduate. “It was not where ambitious people went,” says Kim, who worked in internal HR roles before starting her own firm, Workflow, to help advise startups on people operations. “The stereotype was that HR was for people [who] graduated college with a liberal arts degree and were like: ‘Now what?’

Supreme Court Holds Highly Paid Employee Not Overtime Exempt Due to Daily Rate Pay

February 23, 2023
On February 22, 2023, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that a former oil rig employee who was paid a daily rate that totaled more than $200,000 annually is entitled to overtime pay under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
In the 6–3 decision in Helix Energy Solutions Group, Inc. v. Hewitt, the high court rejected arguments that the former employee was properly classified as exempt from overtime requirements under the FLSA because of his managerial duties and relatively high compensation, instead focusing on whether he was paid on a “salary basis” under the applicable regulations issued by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). In a dissenting opinion, Justice Brett Kavanaugh suggested, as he did during oral arguments, that the DOL regulations are inconsistent with the FLSA.

You Don’t Need to Be “the Boss” to Be a Leader
Harvard Business Review | Matt Mayberry | February 13, 2023
To become an influential person at work, we’re often told we must rise through the ranks or collect a series of fancy credentials. But this is a big misconception. Most people don’t identify as a “leader” unless it’s written into their role, despite the fact that leadership is a skill, not a title. Over the years, through my work as a leadership consultant working in the trenches with companies in nearly every sector, I’ve seen hundreds of early career professionals and individual contributors project more influence than their own managers. The best leaders don’t wait for a promotion to step up. They begin practicing long before then. In its purest form, leadership at work is the ability and desire to accept responsibility for your career. It involves having a vision that benefits not just yourself, but your organization and colleagues. Leaders are skillful at influencing others to believe in that vision and gaining followers that will help them make an impact.

Navigating Uncertainty About Your Role During a Reorg
Harvard Business Review | Dina Denham Smith | February 21, 2023
You’ve likely experienced at least one reorg in your career. And, like most executives and employees, you probably dread them. While a successful redesign can help a company boost performance, they’re often a miserable experience for everyone involved. Most reorganizations take 10 months from plan to implementation, and the extended uncertainty leads to significant stress and anxiety, regardless of whether job losses accompany the change. It’s no wonder approximately 60% of organizations experience plummeting productivity during this limbo state. Reorgs can be especially difficult when you’re nervous about what might happen with your role.

‘All Right, All Right.’ KC May Change ‘Ridiculous’ Tax Refund Policy for Remote Workers
Mike Hendricks | The Kansas City Star | February 16, 2023
Kansas City may reverse a new policy that makes it far more difficult for non-resident remote workers to get refunds of city earnings taxes that are withheld from their paychecks. The proposal comes after complaints about a little-noticed ordinance passed last March that made the refund process so cumbersome that officials planned to reap a windfall worth as much as $17 million from unclaimed refunds.
The proposed ordinance that makes the process easier to get a refund was dated Feb. 9 — three days after The Star made officials aware it was working on an article about the impediments the city had created that made it hard for people to get a refund. The proposal was to have been discussed at Wednesday’s regular meeting of the city council’s finance committee, but the meeting was canceled for the Chiefs’ victory parade.

Are You Following These 6 Best Practices for Workplace Wellness?
HR executive | February 13, 2023
Steven Van Yoder
Workplace wellness is a multi-billion-dollar industry. In 2019, over 84% of large employers (with 200 or more workers) who provided health benefits offered a workplace wellness program, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation, and research shows that employers plan to increase investments in workplace wellness in the coming years.
Yet, most employers are not following best practices when designing and implementing their workplace wellness efforts.

10 Predictions About Work and Leadership This Year
HR executive | Dean Carter
February 8, 2023
Three years ago, the once-distant future of work landed in our laps when a global pandemic changed everything. The roles of HR leaders became more complex, as organizations placed more emphasis on employee safety and wellbeing, communications and DE&I, among other areas. And in the transformations that followed, the CHRO has become a more strategic role; in a recent Accenture survey of 570 CEOs, 89% said CHROs should have a central role in ensuring long-term, profitable growth.

5 Résumé Trends – And How HR Can Prepare for Today’s Job Candidates
HR Morning | Michele McGovern | February 21, 2023
Get ready HR: New résumé trends are coming your way.
Between mass layoffs and this year’s hiring trends, you’ll likely see an influx of résumés – and they’ll look and feel a bit different than what you’ve had in recent years.
The reason for change is the same as it has been in the past: Candidates want to stand out. The change will be good for HR because candidates will make your organization’s needs the focus of their résumés.
Résumé trends affect your approach
Now the question is: How can you find the candidates with the most potential to be rock stars in your organization? “Be efficient and empathetic. Employers must be responsive and considerate of those qualified candidates who are pursuing jobs at organizations for which they are a potential fit,” says Dr. Marie Gould Harper, Interim Acting Provost and Dean of the Dr. Wallace E. Boston Business School at American Public University System. “As candidates progress or fall out of the recruitment process, transparency can be a key differentiator for organizations.”
