March & April 2024

In-Person American Sign Language Class

Mondays, March 4 & 18 | 6 – 7 p.m.

ISD campus

These classes feature a weekly theme. Offered to families of ISD and others in the local area who have children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Non-ISD families are welcome; however, space is limited and ISD families will be prioritized. Please register to reserve your seat.

In-Person ASL Classes

ASL Storytime

Thursday, March 7 | 6 – 7 p.m.

Held at the ISD Elementary Library.

All area families who have children who are deaf or hard-of-hearing are welcome, including those who do not have students enrolled at ISD.

Thursdays, March 21 & 28 | 6 – 7:30 p.m.

Virtually or in-person at ISD

Theme to be announced.

For families and educators of school-age children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Non-ISD families and educators are welcome! Interpreters provided. Free; registration required.

Optimist Oratorical Competition

Thursday, April 18 | Register by April 5

Iowa School for the Deaf campus

The annual Optimist-sponsored oratorical contest is Thursday, April 18 from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the ISD Lied Multipurpose Complex. Sophomores, juniors and seniors are invited to present their four-to-five-minute speech (spoken English or ASL) on the theme, "How to Change the World with Optimism." First place winners earn a $2,500 scholarship; second place winners earn a $1,500 scholarship.

Fundraiser to benefit the Class of 2025

Held on the ISD campus. Have a ball while supporting the Class of 2025! Six-on-six teams are needed for this fast-paced event!

Science Center of Iowa in Des Moines

This STEM activity is just for kindergarten through eighth graders who are deaf or hard of hearing! Activities are accessible! FREE event.
