A message from our Rector

Dear St. James Community,

Our sister parish, All Saints’ in West Newbury, has faced some very difficult times over the last ten years. Our Diocese is trying to figure out how best to help this struggling yet faith- filled parish. We in Amesbury have been looked on as a possible avenue of assistance. Beginning with the fourth Sunday in February and continuing on the fourth Sundays of March, April, and May, I will be leading the 10am service at All Saints’ while All Saints’ supply priest, who is paid by All Saints’, will lead our 10am service. I will continue to lead our 8 o'clock service at St. James on those Sundays.

The reason for this exchange is to see if this is a good fit. What I mean by good fit is that Bishop Gates and our Regional Canon Martha Hubbard have asked me if I would like to explore the possibility of becoming All Saints’ quarter time Vicar-in-Charge. This could lead to a wonderful relationship between our two parishes as well as help all involved. All Saints’ would have a sense of stability, I would become a full-time priest, and All Saints’ will take on some of my overall compensation at St. James.

We will explore this relationship over the next few months to see if this is in fact a possibility. There will be several meetings going forward between the wardens and vestries of both parishes and Canon Hubbard as this period of exploration continues. There will also be parish involvement as we move into Spring to give a voice to our community as how best to shape our future.

Please know that after May, I will once again be back at St. James’ every Sunday at both services. Should this idea of “sharing” me become a reality it will come into being with very little, if any disruption to our communal life here. This is one of the parameters we have set. In the end we hope this will be a wonderful opportunity for our parishes and diocese as we continue living the Good News as Christ’s disciples in the twenty-first century.

Please know you all remain in my prayers as we accompany Our Lord and walk the forty days of Lent.

Yours in Christ,

GODLY PLAY: "I wonder. . . !"

A favorite item in our Godly Play classroom is our desert box, a plexiglass and wood box mounted on wheels (with a sturdy cover, too) - it's the scene for many lessons and often the first choice for free play (the "work" of our classroom). Come downstairs to our beautiful classroom and take a peek, or ask for a tour from our dedicated teachers: Jenn Sanborn, Kimberly Potts, and Linda Davis Siess. Or ask a current or former student!
St James' Youth meet twice a month for classes led by Linda Davis Siess and Ron Jones.

Our March 6 class focused on John 3:16 (did you see our sign out on the sidewalk?). They also brainstormed "Ten Best Ways for a Holy Lent" - take a look in our Parish Hall for their poster.

Next class: March 21, a deeper dive into the lessons of Lent. We're also planning a fun family activity (bowling, skating, rock-climbing, anyone!)

Kudos, too, to our youth for serving faithfully each week at the altar. Say hello, and ask them a question or two!
St James is a strong and loving community
that welcomes, encourages and empowers all
to grow in Christ and to do God's work in the world.
