Seattle Symphony Masterclasses
We are extremely fortunate to have a world class symphony right here in our city, and even luckier to have these musicians come and spend some time with our young musicians. This past week, Seattle Symphony’s Assistant Principal Horn player, Mark Robbins, gave a masterclass for BHS’s French horn players. In the coming weeks, piccolo player, Zartouhi Dombourian-Eby, will be visiting the school.
Wind Ensemble and Navy Band Northwest Perform November 10
BHS Wind Ensemble is thrilled to be sharing the stage with Navy Band Northwest on November 11, 2022 in the Earl Kelly Performing Arts center. Students will have the opportunity to work with these talented musicians during the day and to share the concert stage that evening. All band students will be asked to attend, whether on stage or not. The caliber of musicianship that the Navy Band has to offer is exceptional and we encourage every family to attend.
The Wind Ensemble will perform alone first, and then share the stage with the Navy Band Northwest for Holst’s 2nd Suite in F Concert, to be finished off with a performance by The Navy Band Northwest.

Choir
Fall Choir Concert
From Director of Choirs Courrtney Rowley: “It was wonderful to see so many of you this past Thursday at Curriculum Night! If I didn’t see you then, I look forward to hopefully seeing or meeting you at our fall concert, which is Wednesday, October 26th at 7:30 PM in the BHS Performing Arts Center. It should be an awesome evening of music from all the choirs, with a program entitled “How Can I Keep From Singing.” Call time for students is 6:30 pm. Please make sure that they try on their concert attire prior to the day of the concert, and that they have black dress shows (closed toed, low heeled or flat) and black socks for the tuxedos. Also, students wearing tuxes need to make sure they have the correct tux shirt – see the attached info sheet on the tux bag!”
Concert Choir and Advanced Chorale NYC Tour
Our New York City Tour and Carnegie Hall performance is ON!!! The trip dates are Wednesday, April 12 through Sunday, April 16. Please note, this is the 2nd half of our spring break.
While in NY, we’ll be participating in the Choirs of America Festival for Top Choirs!
The first day of the festival is held at Queens College. Both Advanced Chorale and Concert Choir will present their own set up three pieces for an adjudication panel of world class clinicians; truly, these are some of the best choir directors in the field. They will each receive an hour clinic after their performance with one of the clinicians, and will have the opportunity to hear other great choirs from across the U.S.
The second day of the festival (Friday, April 14), will be the Carnegie Hall performance. Ballard was selected for the Collaborative concert track, which means we will have the opportunity to join the Harvard-Radcliffe Collegium Musicum (their mixed choir) for the SATB and Carnegie Hall premiere of Black American composer Tesfa Wondemagegnehu's To Repair work. This new work was a result of a journey that Tesfa took in the summer of 2021, when we spent weeks traveling to black communities across America, talking to people about what it will truly take to repair the effects of slavery in this country. I am thrilled that our students will have the opportunity to collaborate with the composer and an excellent college choir on this important and exciting work! You can read more about the piece in a recent Forbes Magazine article.
Ballard will also have the opportunity to perform by ourselves on the Carnegie stage in a spotlight performance.
Please fill out this very quick survey ASAP to assist us in planning for this trip.

In this masterful translation, Heaney exposes the darkness and the humanity in Sophocles' masterpiece Antigone. Sophocles' play explores the conflict between those who affirm the individual's human rights and those in power who are protecting the security of the state.
The Burial at Thebes is a 5th Century BC play that is prophetically still alive and relevant in 21st century America. In our time, we see political leaders who cling to power, willing to crush the rights of individuals and groups who stand in their way. Antigone is a powerful female who stands up for her beliefs courageously because the consequences are so great.
The Ballard High School production will be set in 2016 during the Women’s March in Washington D.C., bringing Sophocles’ classic drama to the forefront of American politics and the continuing battle for human rights.
See the website for more details about the show and the full cast list.

Better Together Direct Giving Campaign Kicks Off Oct 20
We are beyond excited for another year to be fully back in person celebrating our talented actors and musicians. This year we are focusing on reconnecting and rebuilding. And, we need your help! We are raising funds this year for scholarships and coaching. Our goal is $35,000
Scholarships: Trips are back! A goal of our booster club is to make performing arts available to every student who wants to participate. Many students in the program—and students who want to participate in the program—don’t have funds to pay for fees or trips. We want these programs to be an equitable, enriching, and safe place for all kids to express themselves and grow. That is why our scholarships are so valuable to our booster program.
Coaching: Our fantastic directors are stepping up efforts to bring in clinicians and specialists to work closely with the student groups to get everyone back into award-winning form. Specialists and coaching make up more than half of the Ballard Performing Arts Booster Club budget.
Our direct giving campaign will run from October 20th through November 16th. We will celebrate our successes at the wrap party at Bickerson’s Brewery the night of the 16th.
It’s easy to donate!
TEXT: Text BETTER2GETHER22 to 44321

There will be student performances, and this is a great chance to get to know other parents in the program in a casual setting.
Admission is free, but we’ll have raffles and opportunities to donate to the program. Students should look for a signup link to reserve a slot for a performance soon.

Coming Soon: Online Coffee Sales to Support BPA Students
We are partnering once again with Caffe Appassionato, who will generously donate $6.50 from every $14 (12oz) bag sold to support the BPA students and programs. Students will earn $6/bag for every order that has their name included with it. That $6/bag earns credit to that student's ASB account and those funds can then be used to pay for BPA program fees and trips, and they can even be transferred to a younger sibling when a student graduates. Sales with no name will go to the BPA ASB fund. Coffee sales will be online in early November and the order deadline will be November 16th. Coffee pickup will be at the winter concerts the week of December 5th. Look for more information soon.
