Fat Tuesday Parades

Roll at 10:00 AM

Parade Route Change

Due to the substantial increase in length of our 3 Mardi Gras day parades, the route this year will not return down Boston Street for a second run. Instead, they will turn left on Jefferson Avenue (from 23rd Ave) and return to the Justice Center.

Once again, trash bins will be placed along the route. Once a bag is full, please remove it, tie it off and install the new bag from the bottom of the box : )

Be Nice, Be Safe

RVs, trailers and tents on Jefferson Avenue should be at least 10' from the roadside edge, allowing for other parade watching pedestrians access to the route.

Parking on the route should not encroach onto the viewing area. Where allowed, parking may begin 36 hours prior to parade time.

For safety reasons, parade ladders should be at least one ladder-length from the street's edge.

Thanks.

Lions Club Hometown Parade

Many of us remember the Lions Club parade as our Mardi Gras day hometown parade … homemade, home decorated trucks, boats and bicycles. Anyone and everyone could participate.

After more than 60 years of parading, they will once again kick off our festivities beginning at 10:00 AM.

Pictured from 1992 is the inimitable Pete Fitzmorris.

Krewe of Covington

The Mystic Krewe of Covington recently celebrated their 71st tableau and ball at the Covington Lions Club. Members danced into the ballroom to traditional Mardi Gras music.

The 2023 queen, Mrs. Sean Schlenker Pregeant , wore a flared ball gown of ivory tull with sparkles and sequins.

Pictured from last year's ball are Jonathan Salter, Mrs. Pregeant and Squeak. All have done Zumba with the Mayor.

"K of C" will parade on Mardi Gras Day immediately following the Lions Club.

Trash and Recycling

Moving to Automated

No More Bags, Please

This Spring our trash company is moving to robotic-arm bin pick-up. All trash should be placed in a bin. You should have one trash bin and one recycle bin supplied by Coastal. Please begin to phase out round plastic and metal cans.

If you need a third bin you may purchase one from Coastal or from a local store. It should be the 85 gallon sturdy, square type (not the old, round style).

Congratulations to Justin Jefferson

Louisiana native, Destrehan High graduate and LSU national championship winner Justin Jefferson was recently named the NFL Offensive Player of the Year.

But Hold On, Pump the Brakes ... Congratulations to Isiah Robertson

Covington has its own NFL Player of the Year. In 1971 our own Isiah Robertson was named Defensive Rookie of the Year. He was the first-round draft choice of the Los Angeles Rams, the 10th player chosen overall. Known as the "Black Dick Butkus," star teammate Deacon Jones called Robertson "the best No. 1 choice I've seen since I've been with the Rams."

Isiah attended Southern University where in his senior year he made 112 tackles and had 45 assists. The season was highlighted by a record setting 102 yard interception return for a game winning touchdown against arch rival Grambling State University in the game's waning seconds and a 15 tackle game against Prairie View in which he preserved a tie with a blocked extra point attempt.

Being the time of segregation, Isiah attended elementary and junior high at Rosenwald School (opened in 1940) on N. Tyler Street. Today it serves as the Harrison Curriculum Center for St. Tammany Parish Schools.

In the late 1960s, a new school was constructed just down the street: Pineview High School. It would serve for three years as the high school for Black students.

Today Pineview is a Middle School serving our 4th, 5th and 6th graders.

Isiah was known for helping others. He had a deep passion for this and thus founded the House of Isiah, a faith based drug and alcohol treatment center for men.

Isiah was tragically killed in an automobile accident in December of 2018. He is truly missed by all who knew and loved him.
