Thank you to the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation (FSTC) Archives for the following fun historical Mardi Gras content:

Lack of Mardi Gras Event Advertising in 1908:

"Letter dated 1/24/1908 to E. B. Gaston from John P. Lowell in Mobile, Alabama."

"Lowell mentions that, in the last issue of the Courier, he does not see an advertisement about Mardi Gras, and he thinks the Fairhope Courier should have its share of ad money. He suggests Gaston come to Mobile and see Mr. Wilson. vi.10.41 - Letter"

-FSTC Archives

"Letter dated 1/11/1910 to E. B. Gaston from Paul Wilson on behalf of the Mobile Carnival Association enclosing $4.00 for advertisements in the Fairhope Courier for Mardi Gras February 6, 7 & 8, 1910. vii.6.33 - Letter"

Mardi Gras Advertising, 1910:

"Editor E.B. Gaston, Dear Sir: - Each year the Carnival Association has endeavored to spend a certain amount of the Carnival fund with our friends, the out of town newspapers, and this year we are asking your cooperation in letting your readers know the date of our Mardi Gras which will be February 6-7-8-1910. Please run the enclosed advertisement in your paper commencing at the date of your next issue and give us as much space and what local notices you can for $4.00."

"Yours very truly,

Paul Wilson, Secretary"

Parading back into February 2025, now:

According to online currency calculators, $4 in 1910 is about $130 today.

A local organization recently submitted a request to "Let's Go! Fairhope" via our 16.4K-members social media group seeking additional sources for free advertising.

I can't fault them for their shortsighted question, but it was a reminder that in the age of social media and hand-held flashing billboards carried in trouser pockets, we have become used to the misconception that promotion should be free.

While Let's Go! Fairhope offers free listings in the searchable online electronic calendar, there is actually nothing free about any advertising on social media, electronic newsletters, here, or anywhere. Somewhere, someone is paying.

Whether monetarily, time-labor wise, or accepting "free" content chosen for you by remote technology conglomerates, if you aren't paying, at what cost are messages being received, (or not)?

I am not shy about admitting we are in danger of not having this particular events resource in the future due to many local businesses and organizations thinking someone else should pay.

Thankfully, we have some contributing local organizations, businesses, sponsors, and partners who realize the important social and economic value that "Let's Go! Fairhope" provides to our community. However, many more contributors are needed to make continuing viable.

Your thoughts on how to continue this project are encouraged and welcome.
