Vallejo, CA - The City of Vallejo is pleased to report continued progress on the Mare Island Bridge refurbishment project, including the arrival of a critical replacement part needed to restore normal bridge operations.
The replacement coupling for the bridge's mechanical system has been received, and installation is anticipated on Monday, November 9. Once installed, the bridge is expected to resume normal opening operations, allowing marine traffic to pass as designed.
While this repair addresses the immediate operational issue, additional work will be required to correct the bridge's balance system. That repair will necessitate a full closure of the bridge to all traffic for several hours. The work has not yet been scheduled, but planning is underway and is expected to take place within the coming weeks. Additional information will be shared as details become available.
Historic Medallion Returning to the Bridge
Another exciting milestone is also on the horizon as crews prepare to reinstall the historic Mare Island Naval Shipyard Medallion following its refurbishment.
Reinstallation of the medallion will require the use of a large crane, resulting in a temporary bridge closure to accommodate the work safely. The closure is currently scheduled for Wednesday, November 18, and Thursday, November 19.
The Mare Island Bridge will close to vehicular, pedestrian, and bicyclist traffic at 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 18, and is expected to reopen at approximately 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 19.
During the closure, motorists will be required to use the State Route 37 Napa River Bridge as a detour route. Emergency vehicles will continue to have access across the Mare Island Bridge throughout the closure.
Alternative routes for pedestrians and bicyclists include:
-
The San Francisco Bay Ferry (Mare Island to Vallejo Terminal). Schedule information is available at https://www.sfbayferry.com/routes-schedules/vallejo/
- The Highway 37 Napa River Bridge, approximately a 2.6 mile detour

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to visit the City’s ADA webpage, email ada@cityofvallejo.net, or contact Public Works at (707) 648 5235 for assistance.
The return of the medallion marks an important step in preserving the bridge's historic character and celebrating Mare Island's rich naval heritage. The City looks forward to welcoming this iconic landmark back to its place on the bridge.
All construction and repair activities remain weather dependent. The City will continue to provide updates as work progresses and appreciates the community's patience and cooperation during these important improvement efforts.
