Author Marilyn Hilton Presents Full Cicada Moon Saturday, September 26 at 2PM!

Please welcome back author Marilyn Hilton to Linden Tree as she presents her beautiful new novel-in-verse from Dial Books.

Full Cicada Moon is a touching story that is best for ages 8-12, has received three stared reviews(Kirkus, Booklist, and School Library Journal), and is already a bookseller favorite as you'll see from Alison's review below!

The main character, Mimi, is half-Japanese, half-black, and grew up in Berkeley in the 60s. But then her father gets a job in Vermont, and just after New Year's, Mimi and her mother Emiko go to meet him. The prose is all in verse, and it's lovely.

Mimi understands Japanese and knows a lot about the culture herself; she's not a child that looked down on, or has pulled away from, her mother's culture. She has made it a part of herself. There's racism in Vermont, and Mimi gets quietly tired of being asked, "What are you?" Still, her parents taught her to be respectful. And as a gifted, intelligent little girl, she gets confused when her teachers tell her she shouldn't be scoring so well on her tests, because she is female. She's even more confused when she gets laughed at for wanting to be an astronaut. Mimi is quietly persistent in what she believes, and navigates muddy waters with poise and charm.

In middle grade fiction, family is so often avoided that it's nice to see a functioning, loving family support each other the way they do in this book.

Author Event For Teens: Michelle Tea with Girl at the Bottom of the Sea This Sunday, September 27 at 3PM!

Michelle Tea, author of The Girl at the Bottom of the Sea, presents her sequel to Mermaid in Chelsea Creek from McSweeneys!

About the book: Sophie Swankowski is the hero from the stories she's been hearing all her life: she's the girl who will save the world. Or so she's been told.

Now she and her unlikely guardian-the gruff, filthy mermaid Syrena-must travel the pitch-black seas from broken-down Chelsea, Massachusetts, to Syrena's homeland in Poland. Along the way, Syrena will reveal the terrible truth about her past, and teach Sophie about the ages-old source of her newly discovered power. But left behind in Chelsea, without Sophie to protect them from the dark magic she's awakened, what will become of Sophie's friends and family?

This fantasy book is perfect for ages 13-16.
