Visionary Marin

From left to right: Peter Collins, Rev. Bethany Nelson, Bettie Hodges, Kim Mazzuca & Rev. Scott Quinn

Sunday, November 11th, MIC held its 13th Annual Visionary Marin benefit celebrating Bettie Hodges of the Hannah Project and Kim Mazzuca of 10,000 Degrees, two visionaries making a huge impact in educational equity in Marin County.  Thank you to all of our sponsors for making Visionary Marin possible, and thank you to our attendees for joining us for a wonderful evening of community and celebration!

Thank you also to Peter Collins for his interview with our honorees: Bettie Hodges  and Kim Mazzuca, both of whom passionately urged the dismantling of structural racism, which continues to impede education equity efforts. They also offered a vision in which the upcoming generation is supported, educated and equipped to create a more just society in which everyone is able to reach their full potential.

California Fires

MIC extends our condolences and prayers for all those impacted by the fires in California. Here are a few websites offering opportunities to help:

Families Belong Together

This banner hanging in Sleepy Hollow Presbyterian Church was created by Laurie Marshall, Jody Brockett, Koren Grubb, Charles Wei, VanIke Stewart, and Barb Zilber.

When Sleepy Hollow Presbyterian Church in San Anselmo learned that immigrant children were being separated from their parents and put in cages, they heard God's call to bold action. The above banner is community-created and is displayed in the church so that these children are never forgotten.  Rev. Beverly Brewster, the church's pastor, said, "We stand against cruelty and de-humanization, and stand with the children, who deserve full human rights and compassionate care."

The church would appreciate suggestions about rallies, protests, and events in support of immigrant children where they might go with the banner.  Please contact Rev. Beverly Brewster with suggestions: beverlybrewster@comcast.net.

Public Charge

Another challenge to keeping families together is the attempt to change "public charge" policy, which seeks to further limit who is eligible for legal entry and permanent resident status. See the links below for more information and how your faith community can respond:

MIC Monthly Meditation

Christopher Love & Robin O'Brien
Spiritual Song

Wednesday, December 12th
5:30 - 6:30pm

First Presbyterian Church
1510 Fifth Ave.
San Rafael, CA 94901

Cost: Love Offering at the door
(suggested donation $10-$20)

Every second Wednesday of the month, a leader from a different spiritual community will offer a meditation or spiritual practice and explain how it flows from the basic tenets of his/her faith tradition. Each gathering will include time for questions and insights that emerge from our shared time of intentional spiritual practice.

This month our leaders are:
Christopher Love & Robin O'Brien

Christopher Love has enjoyed music throughout his life, beginning in boys choir as a child.  He went on to study classical voice and has performed in a variety of choral ensembles.  He also studied classical trumpet at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.  In his other life, he is a long-time yoga instructor and spiritual life coach.  Yoga led him to Indian music, where he learned to play the harmonium and lead Kirtan, an energetic and meditative practice of singing to the divine.  His devotional music can be heard in his classes and throughout the bay area at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, Yoga St. John's in Ross, and Mythica Foundation events.

Robin O'Brien is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music in Boston.  As a singer and composer she has been facilitating worship and creating contemplative environments in churches, meditation groups, and yoga classes since 2005.  With a deep respect for music's power to nurture wholeness, she has had the privilege of singing for and with hospice clients since 2009.  "Music has always been, for me, a valuable currency connecting self, Spirit, and community."
