Dear Marineros,

We have heard your questions about the recent major oil spill off the Orange County coast and have gathered some information that may be of interest.

A unified command consisting of Beta Offshore, the Coast Guard, and California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Office of Spill Prevention and Response (CDFW-OSPR) was established to respond to this event. The spill is located approximately 20 miles away from Catalina Island and has not caused reported impacts to Avalon or Catalina’s remote beaches. It is being contained by booms to inhibit additional spread.

Transportation
Transportation to the Island via Catalina Express’ Long Beach and San Pedro ports have not been impacted. Currently harbors at Dana Point and Newport Beach remain closed. With the closure of the harbor, Catalina Express Dana Point departures have been cancelled. Visit the Catalina Express website for updates.

The Catalina Flyer is not currently operating due to mechanical issues in addition to the oil spill.

Boaters impacted by the spill can contact 1-866-985-8366 to report claims.
Oil Spill Resources
The USC Sea Grant Program has created a website that is kept updated with information and resources as the Southern California oil spill event and clean-up progresses.
