Reviewing this newsletter brings back my childhood Y memories. I remember going to our local Y on Friday nights for activities. I had a great time and I’m sure my single parent mom appreciated an evening without kids. This month, we’re bringing back Parents Night Out for our Marion families. I hope all the kids who attend have just as much fun as I did; and I hope their parents enjoy their free evening just like my mom did.

February is also the month we are recruiting volunteers for our Annual Campaign. This also brings back memories. I was at the Y on Friday nights and my mom enjoying a needed break because of altruistic volunteers and generous donors, just like we have here in Marion. My family was on welfare (that’s what we called it then) and living in government low-income housing. We were Y members because of financial assistance from the Mankato YMCA. Many people in Marion are Y members today because of members’ generosity … generosity as a volunteer and generosity in giving. If you are asked to volunteer or give, I hope you will think of families like my childhood one, who depend on financial assistance to enjoy all the Y offers.

The President’s Day Youth Basketball Tournament reminds me of an early Y job I held as Youth Program Director of the YMCA in Wooster (Ohio). We had a large youth basketball league with close to 200 elementary school-age participants. I would often officiate for the youngest age group. I filled in there because I’m not a basketball expert, but loved helping to teach 5 and 6 year olds to dribble, pass and be part of a team. If you’re available, stop in on President’s Day and see the excitement of the tournament.

Thank you for being part of the Marion Family YMCA and for being part of my Y memories.
