The Village is seeking volunteers to serve on the Code Committee. It is anticipated that the Code Committee will meet twice a month for approximately 2-3 hours each time starting in November. Additional time commitment will involve time for reviewing materials and preparing for meetings.

No specific background is required—just an interest in supporting the quality of life of Greenport residents and a willingness to learn how Village Code works.

Committee members will help review and update the Code to ensure it aligns with community priorities, including:

  • Housing and Land Use – how zoning and development rules shape where and how people live.

  • Quality of Life – issues such as noise, parking, and the balance between residents and visitors.

  • Waterfront and Environment – coastal resiliency, working waterfront, and environmental protection.

  • Village Operations – procedures, enforcement, and clarity of rules across all chapters of the Code.

This opportunity is open to anyone living in Greenport Hamlet. If interested, please send the Village Clerk at chall@greenportvillage.org an email with a brief statement about yourself and why you would like to volunteer for this committee. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Tricia Hammes (Chairperson of the Code Committee) at phammes@greenportvillage.org.

The BID Board is seeking two new members, reserved for property owners (or their representatives) in the Business Improvement District.

The Carousel and Mini Railroad committees are looking for new members, especially parents of young children.

The Mitchell Park 25th Anniversary & America’s 250th Committee (July 2026) is seeking members.

The Arts Committee needs members to coordinate downtown murals.

The Camera Obscura and Dances in the Park need volunteers.

For more information and to apply to any of the above, email info@greenportvillage.org. For any committees, please include a paragraph or two about yourself, why you’re interested in serving on the committee, and any particular experience or knowledge you feel might be helpful.

Southold Town committees are always open to Greenport residents, and Greenporters are encouraged to apply. It's important to have our voices and perspectives represented on town-wide issues. Find descriptions and meeting schedules for committees here: www.southoldtownny.gov/27/Government. There are no current openings, but if interested, attend a committee meeting and contact the Town Clerk's office for more information and to put your application on file for when there are openings.

MONTHLY VILLAGE BOARD HIGHLIGHTS

PLANNING BOARD

  • Zoning Code Amendments: Two preliminary, proposed framework documents, available on the village website, were discussed. These relate to policies and proposed amendments to village code with regard to increasing supply of additional, full-time housing and amending code to allow multi-residential housing in the downtown Retail Commercial District.
  • Vacancy Registry: Addressing expressed concerns regarding vacancy of commercial and residential properties, Chairman Hammes provided an explanation of the value of a vacancy registry and why the Planning Board is proposing a framework for a registry versus a vacancy tax. She also reinforced the need for enforcement in enacting a registry.

HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION

  • Historic Plaque Program & Signage Initiative: The HPC is exploring costs and feasibility of establishing a historic plaque program. The goal is to foster community pride. The Commission has researched signage options and is now seeking input on design and material preferences.
  • New Fee Proposal: The HPC is proposing, for review by the Board of Trustees, a new application fee category for minor projects with a simple application at a fee of $50. This is an additional fee category which compliments the current application and $100 fee for major projects.

VILLAGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

  • Southold Town Zoning Update: A special meeting of the Board of Trustees was held August 11th to discuss the Southold Town Zoning Update and its impact on greater Greenport at the gateways to the Village, to the west on Main Road and to the North at North Road. The meeting addressed issues including commercial development in, or adjacent to, residential areas as well as housing and affordable housing.
  • Preservation Long Island Presentation: Tara Cubie from Preservation Long Island spoke on the value of historic preservation as a component of a planning process, the benefits to Greenport Village, the necessity for local protections, and the need to look at the whole Village and not just individual properties.
  • Planning Board Survey Results: Elizabeth Talerman, Planning Board member, presented the findings of the June Survey to the Board of Trustees. Survey findings can be accessed via the village website.
  • The Fire Fighter Boat Returns: The museum boat will be docked at Mitchell Park Marina for the Maritime Festival and will stay in Greenport through Sunday, May 31, 2026.
  • Archive Grant Awarded: The Village has been granted $149,500 for further work in the Spring of 2026 on organizing and ultimately scanning public records.
  • Visitor's Dock Proposal: Deputy Mayor Brennan proposed restoring a visitor’s dock, but relocating it away from commercial activity and ferries, to the Mitchell Park Marina. A floating dock might be added in the “cut-out” and would operate as short-stay (hourly) docking at a reasonable fee (for under half-day stays).
  • Business Improvement Report: David Serure, treasurer of the Greenport Village Business Improvement District, reviewed its report on the 2024-2025 financials. The BID received an allocation of taxes from the Village of $53,008 and raised $4,000 in sponsorship which was short of the budgeted $7,500. The BID received a reimbursement grant from FEMA (for disaster relief from COVID received and donated by The Greenporter and Greenport Harbor Brewing Co) for $96,750 to be used for capital improvements including an allocation for holiday lights. There were suggestions for consideration of funding for trash cans and the visitor's dock.
