NIHB Applauds Mark Cruz's Appointment as Senior Advisor for Indian Health to the Secretary of HHS

We are thrilled to share a historic and long-awaited milestone for Indian Country: Mark Cruz has been appointed as the first-ever Senior Advisor for Indian Health to the Secretary of Health and Human Services. This moment reflects the advocacy, determination, and vision of Tribal leaders, communities, and allies across the nation.

The creation of this role is something that the National Indian Health Board (NIHB), in partnership with Tribal Nations, has championed across many administrations. It represents a bold and necessary step to ensure that Tribal health priorities are not only heard but actively integrated into the highest levels of federal health policy and decision-making.

Secretary Kennedy’s decision to establish this position, and to appoint Mark Cruz to serve in it, is a clear affirmation of the federal government’s trust and treaty obligations. It also demonstrates a commitment to amplifying sovereign Tribal voices and advancing the health and well-being of American Indian and Alaska Native peoples through partnership and respect.

Mark Cruz brings to this new role a powerful combination of lived experience, deep policy expertise, unwavering integrity, and an enduring connection to community. As a citizen of the Klamath Tribes and a respected leader in Indian health policy, Mark has consistently demonstrated a fierce commitment to improving the health and well-being of Our People.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Mark and look forward to walking alongside him in this new chapter. NIHB stands ready to be a strong partner in supporting the work ahead—work that honors our ancestors, empowers our present, and protects future generations.
