5 Ways to Get the Kids Outside for Summer
From swimming to trail blazing and bocce ball to farm chores, here are our suggestions for getting the kids outdoors and answering the "I'm bored" refrain of summer.
Walk Through the Hood House History
Experience the magic of the Hood House complex on a stroll with local historian Arthur Dawson. Join either the July 12 or Aug. 9 walk hosted by the Sonoma County Regional Parks Foundation to benefit future restorations of the 1859 mansion. Tickets include admission and a drink at that evening's Funky Fridays concert.
Safest Swimming on the Russian River
The swim area at Healdsburg Veterans Memo rial Beach is open! Each summer we install a temporary dam just below the beach to create a calm, deep swim zone, which Regional Parks' lifeguards watch over daily. This is one of the safest spots to swim on the river, so come out and spend a day with us.
How to Plan a Float Trip
Floating on the Russian River is a classic summer experience in Sonoma County. But a tubing adventure can go flat in no time if you don't plan ahead. Here are our do's and don'ts for a successful float trip .
Challenge Yourself to Summer Hikes
Thanks to everyone who's hiking their way through this summer's Sonoma County Trails Challenge . There's still time to get started by downloading your free Trails Challenge guidebook and picking five parks to hike by Aug. 31.

If you attend the Mark West Creek park preview days July 13 or Aug. 10 , you're welcome to count a hike there as one of your Trails Challenge outings. And don't forget about the possibility of through-hiking North Sonoma Mountain Regional Park-Jack London State Historic Park by using the Sugar Shuttle July 13 or 14 .
Learn the Stories of the Land
Who lived here before us? What influences have past practices had on our landscapes? Join us for "Stories of the Land," a series of outings that focus on the people of Sonoma County and how their histories are tied to our parks. Visit Gualala Point on July 13, Helen Putnam on July 20 and Tolay Lake on Aug. 15 .
Ranger Tales in the Redwoods
Join a ranger for an informative, interactive evening in the redwoods at Riverfront Regional Park on July 27 and Aug. 31 . Bring the family and learn about local wildlife, habitats, tall, tall trees and the odd and amazing flora all around us.
